VHS : Whistle Down The Wind [1961]

Whistle Down The Wind [1961]

starring: Alan Bates, Bernard Lee, Hayley Mills, Norman Bird, Elsie Wagstaff
directed by: Bryan Forbes
January 12, 1997
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

A truly lovely film, beautifully shot in black and white, and definitely an all time British classic from the early 60s.

Hayley Mills leads a marvellous cast of some very talented and 'innocent' children who mistakenly believe a criminal on the run to be Jesus Christ.

Perfectly scripted with some great dialogue after being sent to bed between the two sisters after discovering who they believe to be Jesus in the barn, and lots of 'typical' behaviour from children of that period, and from a time long gone... (more's the pity...) After viewing this movie, nobody should be under any illusion that children are better off with all their designer clothes, mobile phones, sophisticated toys, and all the protection ... Read More:

VHS : Middlemarch [1994]

Middlemarch [1994]

starring: Juliet Aubrey, Robert Hardy, Douglas Hodge, Peter Jeffrey, Trevyn McDowell
directed by: Anthony Page
April 05, 1994
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

I love peroid dramas and was running out of ones to watch. I didn't see this at the time because I was only 8 years old, but I stumbled across it recently and ordered it.

The plot follows the lifes of the residents of Middlemarch through weddings, deaths and scandals.
Well infused with humour, mainly provided by Mr Brooke and his hopes for election.

Rufus Sewell (Will Ladislaw) is amazing as the romantic lead, giving Mr Darcy a run for his money! Juliet Aubrey also plays the gentle, sweet Dorothea Brooke perfectly.
Two of my favourite characters were Fred and Mary.
The romance of the Doctor and his wife is bittersweet and again the actors are fantastic.

Highly recommended and a must for your collection.

Withnail And I [1986]

starring: Richard E. Grant, Paul McGann, Richard Griffiths, Ralph Brown, Michael Elphick
directed by: Bruce Robinson
November 12, 2001
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

Withnail & I is easily my all time favourite film, there is no other film that I could watch over and over like this one without getting bored. It's the most consistently funny, touching, quotable film I've ever seen. Richard E Grant's performance is sublime and he has never been anywhere near as brilliant as this. The plot is wonderfully simplistic - 2 out of work actors go for a holiday in the lake district to 'rejuvenate' and end up staying in a derelict cottage and suffering a series of 'mishaps'. A wonderful soundtrack, and faultless performances add to it's appeal, and the dialogue is simply hilarious. The extras on this DVD are pretty good, about as complete as you're likely to get, and the inclusion of a bonus soundtrack of the incidental music is very welcome. ... Read More:

VHS : The Sopranos - Series 1

The Sopranos - Series 1

starring: James Gandolfini, Lorraine Bracco, Edie Falco, Michael Imperioli
November 24, 2003
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

By far the best series of the Sopranos, this is a fantastic box set. 5 stars is perhaps a tad generous, but since 4.5 wasn't an option I wasn't going to undersell the item.

It's the most violent of the 5 series, assuming the fifth follows trend, which is a plus for me. That sounds a little immature but hey, I don't know many guys who are fans of the organised crime genre who aren't fans of the violence factor.

I usually judge series'/seasons based on the ratio of episodes I enjoyed and episodes I didn't. Of the 13 episodes in this box sets, there were only 2 that I didn't "enjoy" and even then, they were more than watchable.

The remaining 11 (including the pilot) were fantastic. I look the Sopranos format through all series and if you do too, ... Read More:

Far From The Madding Crowd [1967]

starring: Julie Christie, Peter Finch, Alan Bates, Terence Stamp, Fiona Walker
directed by: John Schlesinger
July 10, 2000
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

One of Thomas Hardy's best-loved novels is sensitively and accurately dramatised in this 1967 classic.

Upon inheriting her uncle's farm, the beautiful and assertive Bathsheba Everdene (Julie Christie) is the most sought after maiden in the whole of Weatherbury. She's forced to choose between the affections of three very different men; local shepherd Gabriel Oak, gentleman farmer Mr. Boldwood and the womanising Sargeant Frank Troy. Here, Hardy's classic tale of love, betrayal and tragedy is faithfully dramatised. Personally though, I think the 1998 Paloma Baeza version is even better!

Wonderful film. Pity I'm not a Papist as I would have loved to have being either a boy at this school and being soundly paddled/strapped by a sadistic priest, or a priest myself spanking, and paddling/strapping all those pretty boyz!!!

Deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious!!!

Chungking Express [1995]

starring: Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Faye Wong, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Valerie Chow
directed by: Kar Wai Wong
June 10, 1996

This early Wan Kar Wai masterpiece is considerably lighter but touches on many of his favorite themes (including isolation, unrequited love) and the two stories are woven together loosely. Absolutely essential movie for anyone who considers themselves a lover of HK cinema.
