VHS : 24 - Season 2 [2002]

24 - Season 2 [2002]

starring: Kiefer Sutherland, Carlos Bernard, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Dennis Haysbert, James Morrison
August 11, 2003
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

This is a different kind of season to the first with some absolutely brilliant moments.

If you can overlook the fact (something you always have to with 24) that all big events happen on the hour then you will love the way each episode leaves you begging to watch more. Classic episodes all the way through.

Again there are twists and turns in this series too, if season 1 didn't make you trust noone then this one surely will.

Saving Private Ryan [1998]

starring: Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tom Sizemore, Edward Burns, Barry Pepper
directed by: Steven Spielberg
November 08, 1999

the first 20 minutes of this film is mind blowing with the d-day beach landings where the soldiers just run into artillery fire and bombs it's so realistic it's frightning.
but then the action slows down has we follow the rescue mission , the cast all perform brilliantly and the "master" mr spielberg keeps us entertained throughout the journey but after the start to the film any other action scene's will obviously dissapoint.this film is a must buy for all war film fans just for the brutal battle scene's alone.

VHS : The Railway Children [1970]

The Railway Children [1970]

starring: Dinah Sheridan, Bernard Cribbins, William Mervyn, Iain Cuthbertson, Jenny Agutter
directed by: Lionel Jeffries
August 07, 1995
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

As the other reviewers have remarked, neither film can be faulted, they are both good old-fashioned adventure yarns which are sadly lacking in the present day. Zero sex or violence, just lashings of ginger beer, steam engines and good old public schoolboy accents.

What lets this release down is presentation. The Railway Children boasts an anamorphic widescreen print which, generally free of dirt, is lacking the full restoration it deserves. Where are the commentaries by the original children, or documentary on how the film was made? This film cries out for supplementary material but doesn't get it.

Swallows and Amazons features a full frame print, coverd in scratches, compression artifacts and is generally very grotty looking, clearly ... Read More:

VHS : Scarlett - Parts 1 and 2 [1994]

Scarlett - Parts 1 and 2 [1994]

starring: Joanne Whalley, Timothy Dalton, Barbara Barrie, Stephen Collins, Annabeth Gish
directed by: John Erman
October 16, 1995

If you want to see everything that's good in this movie then go watch a nature film about Ireland on National Geographic. Watch this "Scarlett" only if you have strong nerves. This Joanne is no Vivien Leigh. The problem is that she is neither Scarlett. Terri Garber would have been much better. Her role as Ashton in "North and South" was very Scarlett-like.

The storyline of this movie has very little to do with the book, which was not a bad book, although not as good as GWTW. Also, this movie is supposed to be sequel of GWTW the movie, not GWTW the book, so how come Suellen all of a sudden have a family life with 3 children? I also missed Cat, she was lovely in the novel and was barely visible in the movie, although they picked a lovely little girl to play ... Read More:

It's A Wonderful Life [1946]

directed by: Frank Capra

Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after roundly attacking ... Read More:

VHS : Richard III [1996]

Richard III [1996]

starring: Ian McKellen, Annette Bening, Jim Broadbent, Robert Downey Jr., Nigel Hawthorne
directed by: Richard Loncraine
May 05, 1997

This is probably about ten percent of the original dialogue, and therefore it rolls along at a terrific pace. Having Richard arrive in a tank through a wall, must be the most dynamic entrance of any character in a Shakespeare play. You can suddenly see the origins of the pantomime Wicked Uncle figure in this piece as well, when he croons over the departing Little Princes 'So wise so young they say do never live long, come-let's to supper.' Fabulous! Don't miss it.

"I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me"
(Foreigner)

This is one of my favorite movies from the eighties, and one that I really wanted to see again, except that it's been very hard to find. I finally got a copy and watched it again recently, and surprisingly, it's still fresh and extremely watchable.

Short Attention Span Summary (SASS):

1. Boy (Lenny von Dohlen) meets computer
2. Boy meets girl (Virginia Madsen)
3. Computer meets girl
4. Girl and computer share a Minuet #4 in G
5. Quirky love triangle develops

Miles Harding (von Dohlen) buys a "state of the art" computer system to help him design a building block ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who The Edge of Destruction and The Pilot Episode [1963]

Doctor Who The Edge of Destruction and The Pilot Episode [1963]

starring: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison
May 02, 2000
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

The pilot episode is interesting if little else, but inside the spaceship / the edge of destruction (whichever title you prefer) gives us the first real chance to see the original TARDIS crew as characters in their own right, instead of just Dalek-chasers. Yes the Daleks made Dr. Who a household name, but does anyone really believe the series would have lasted so long without stories of this calibre? True sci-fi, real characters and not a BEM to be seen.

Upstairs Downstairs - The Fourth Series - Part 1 [1971]

starring: John Alderton, Angela Baddeley, Christopher Beeny, Joan Benham, Madeleine Cannon
directed by: Bill Bain, Christopher Hodson, Derek Bennett, Raymond Menmuir
March 19, 2001
Best Selling > VHS > Drama

LWT were very brave to devote the whole fourth series to The War, but after watching this I can say that the risk more than paid off. Here we have a view if the war not often seen on TV, as most of the episodes concern those left behind. Not one of the regular characters remains untouched by the terrible events, almost always with heartbreaking consequences. But don't let that put you off; the stories are very moving but not depressing...the writing and performances make sure of that, as do the moments of humour that are never far away. In this and the following volume, the series was at the height of its powers. If you want a drama you can really feel involved by, look no further.
