VHS : Star Wars Trilogy [1977]

Star Wars Trilogy [1977]

starring: Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness
directed by: George Lucas, Irvin Kershner, Richard Marquand

What seems as if it were "in a galaxy... far far away", I first viewed Star War IV at the theater. I own the VHS Trilogy, which is very good, but it can not compare to the newly released DVD 4-Disc WideScreen. There are many added scenes, highly digitilized video and sound and a wonderful "new" ending to StarWars VI. So much so, it brought a warm tear. George Lucas, the genious he is, thought ahead. I can and will recommend this Trilogy for the old fans and for the new ones, as well.

Destination Moon [1950]

starring: John Archer, Warner Anderson, Tom Powers, Dick Wesson, Erin O'Brien-Moore
directed by: Irving Pichel

"Destination Moon" was the first major science fiction film produced in the United States and is credited with providing the genre with a realism that it had previously lacked. Based on Robert Heinlein's novel "Rocketship Galileo," this 1950 film does a pretty good job of working out the science for a trip for the moon, 19 years before it actually happened. Compare "Destination Moon" to the low budget "Rocketship X-M," which ws rushed into production by Robert L. Lippert to beat George Pal's movie to the theaters by three weeks, and you can see why it is this movie that is the most important American science fiction film before "2001: A Space Odyssey." Granted, with "Destination Moon" the historical impact greatly outweighs the artistic merits of ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who: Revenge of the Cybermen [1963]

Doctor Who: Revenge of the Cybermen [1963]

starring: Tom Baker, Ian Marter, Michael E. Bryant, Elisabeth Sladen
April 12, 1999
Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

I will confess that this story is not as good as I thought it would be but as time passes it does grow on me.

The cybermen themselves are back on track after their underused performance in 'The Invasion' and are seen to be a lot more cunning and manipulative. E.g. using human greed to aquire the services of a human agent. However I am disapointed that they don't have much involvement in the story until episode 3 but their performance makes up for that.

Tom Baker is excellent as the Doctor, as usual. His banter with the Cyberleader during episode three is a mixture of seriousness and silliness and thats what makes it so good.

Companions Harry and Sarah are seen to have their own mini adventure in this story trying ... Read More:

Doctor Who The Sea Devils [1995] [1963]

The Sea devils is definitely one of the best jon stories. It has all the right and essential ingredients-good monsters, good acting and great cliff hangers. Jon Pertwee is on fine form as the Doctor, giving a cool and calculating performance as the Doc. And Roger Delgado gives one of his best performances too. Another thing about this story is the great sound track. creepy and modern at the same time. this is one of the few doctor who stories with real menace and tension. great story.

directed by: George Lucas

I watched this movie as a kid and thought it was very frightening. Re-watching it 30 years later was really interesting. The movie takes place in a totalitarian future where humanity is living underground. I like how everything is not explained in detail (which year is it, why are everyone underground, are there other countries and so on???). I was a bit worried about Lucas new cgi "improvement", but it is wasn't disturbing at all (most noticeable in some cityscapes and the car chase). This movie has certainly aged well, and with all the extras and a price of about 7 GBP, it is really recommended.

1: Tom Baker is excellent as the deranged Xoanon

2: Louise makes a brilliant entrance as Leela

3: The horda are cute.

4: The tesh are gits, but likeable ones, with their arm flapping!

5: Tom is great as ever as the Doc too.

6: The tribe have more developed characters than usual.

7: Great comic moments, especially how Leela runs into the TARDIS despite the Doc not really wanting to take her.

8: We for once get a sizeable chunk of story to see whats happened after the enemy has been thwarted, which is a nice change.

9: the staue looks impressive.

10: Good actual 25 min eps for a change!

Need I go on?

Doctor Who - The Stones Of Blood

starring: Tom Baker
directed by: Darrol Blake
May 01, 1995

An excellent atmosphere and a first class script from a rubbish season. This story is underrated due to the story being in The Key to Time season. Tom Baker and Mary Tamm give a first class performance. This story is an all time great like The Tomb of the Cybermen. Purchase it. Well worh the money. Also have a look at The Armageddon Factor another classic.

A truly brilliant episode. One of the best shows from the whole series, I can just watch it over and over... Data is on brilliant form with excellent dialog. A new chapter is opened up in the relationship between Guinan and Picard. I wish there were more episodes which combine all the nuances at work in this one. Along with "Yesterdays Enterprise", a superb peice of Science Fiction, Enjoy!

The X Files : Season 2 Collector's Edition

starring: David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson
May 26, 1997
Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

Just when two/three parters were coming into being, season two had mulder and scully chasing if even more strange phenomeon. Those used to modern Xfiles will find it a bit 'old-fasioned' [scully's hair, as if it needs to be pointed out, and the glasses, need i say more?] but well worth the money. Many of the episodes are in the book series, Our Town being a great one to mention.
As with other xfiles box sets, the main problem is the season finale arc. you'l get the conluding episode from the previous season [although not with this one as season 1 ended withwithout 'to be continued'] and the first part of the next season finale. Unfortunatly with season two, the only way to get the two concluding episodes is to buy season 3, as it's the only season cliffhanger not to be ... Read More:
