A thunderous and wondrous action adventure which happens to be a personal favourite of mine from the eighties. Massively underrated in its day and long forgotten by audiences over the years, Beyond Thunder dome is one of those cult classics that succeeds due to the breathtaking visuals, beautiful production design and sheer wealth of imagination on display.
Mel Gibson takes a large portion of his performance from Clint Eastwood's "Man with no name" character of the "Dollars trilogy" movies and evolves the stone cold character of entries 1 & 2 into a much more sympathetic creation. This movie has many plusses as both sociological (people like to compare this to Shakespeare's "The Tempest"). Visual from the color of the sky to the accoutrements of Altiara (Anne Francis). The speculation on what would you do in this situation. And the introduction of Robby the robot who went on to be a star in other movies and a guest on many TV programs. Ive watched this film more times than any other since it was first released on VHS in 1983. It made a lasting impession on me and ive never seen it bettered by any others of its type including 1985's Thunderdome.
So many elements are combined here; SciFi, Horror, Action, Western, Revenge Thriller and combined well. Mad Max was good but this really ramps it up. Set in a desolate and lawless future Australian outback after the fall of civilisation(post world war 3 but NOT after a nuclear conflict - the Bombs fall in the years between parts 2 & 3) the saga continues of Max Rockatansky, the embittered and battle hardened warrior of the wasteland, constantly at war with the ferocious marauders who terrorise the apocalyptic landscape. There's probably not much that can be said about Alien that hasn't been said before but I find myself compelled to post a review as I'm sat watching Alien for the possibly the 100th time.
Alien is easily in my top three favourite films of all time along with Star Wars (Episode IV) and Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's interesting that Alien was conceived by Ridley Scott as a reaction to the Star Wars fever gripping the world. Scott wanted to twist the themes we all know and love in Star Wars around and make something altogether far more dark and sinister. It's a testament to the quality of Star Wars that it can in some way inspire a work as great as this - possibly the equal of Star Wars in every way but inverted in terms of tone. Every time I see ... Urotsuki Doji has been the target of much hate since it first appered in the west, but in the UK is this hate needed? Some would say yes, others no, I say it is up to the individual to decide, but for my own reasoning, I am against censorship to a degree. This covers episodes 1 - 3 of the series, though heavily editied into the Legend of the Overfiend movie. The plot remains intact, but much of the nastier scenes have been edited out for the UK market. Hunt down an import for the full version (available in the USA in a box set), but only if you have a strong stomach. A worthy addition to any anime collection, but only if you note the true intention of the series, to investigate the weakness of the human condition. >>More Details |

In Live Fast and Prosper, Con artists are abundant in the Delta Quadrant, and Voyager comes across some! When Voyager is chased, by angry aliens, Voyager does not know what they are on about.
