VHS : Wartime And The Making Of Wartime

Wartime And The Making Of Wartime

starring: John Levene, Michael Wisher, Mary Greenhalgh, Paul Greenhalgh, Steven Stanley
directed by: Keith Barnfather

Wartime is the first in what is now a long line of independantley produced 'Fan Drama', produced by fans of BBCTVs Dr. Who, who have become professional video producers.

The story features Sgt. Benton from UNIT, and his experiences, pre-unit as a child and how he is haunted in the present by past failings. This may sound contrived, but is anything but. The story is compelling and not at all predictable. The production values are very good indeed.

John levene is an excellant actor who reprises his role as Benton superbly. The late Michael Wisher (Davros) is nothing less than brilliant as Bentons father.

The video comes complete with 'the making of', which in itself is well produced and somehow makes the ... Read More:

'Far Beyond the Stars' goes far beyond the usual realms of science fiction television with its compelling and moving exploration of race issues. Ben Sisko is transported, through an illness, back to 1950s New York as a talented science fiction writer with just one problem - he's not white, and that's practically a crime. I would not hesitate to recommend this episode to anyone. It is an intriguing look at America's past history, and a hopeful look at humanity's future.

Doctor Who The Ark in Space [1963]

starring: John Gorrie, Richard Martin (IV), Tom Baker, Elizabeth Sladen, Ian Marter

In the mid 1970s Doctor Who had reached it's golden period under the helm of Philip Hinchcliffe's and Barry Lett's stewardship. This is a great example of Doctor Who at its best. A great plot, great acting from Tom Baker and the rest of the cast and a great visualisation of an alien race.
Having watched this story as a child in the 70's I had vivid memories of the Wiryn slug that mutates in the "washing machine" like set! It still is a very scary scene and the producers and directors manage to orchestrate a horror element very successfully. I think the present producers Russell T Davies need to beware of falling into the pitfalls of the John Nathan Turner era and should refrain from sending the show up into a comedy/soap opera. VHS : Doctor Who The Android Invasion [1963]

Doctor Who The Android Invasion [1963]

starring: Tom Baker, Elizabeth Sladen, Ian Marter
March 06, 1995
Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

This is a better than usual Tom Baker story, with fun and atmosphere early on and passable androids and aliens. The rocket is a bad jok, same stock footage as Genesis of the Daleks/revenge of the Cybermen again! Considering it hails from the overrated Gothic horror period, which had as many totally boring stories as cool exciting ones, this then is not bad at all. The ending falls rather flat and looks awful (that freeze frame is yuck!) but I have a soft spot for this one. I liked UNIT, sadly this is its last breath. Criminal! And fat comedy guy who stands in for the Brigadier is an insult to the show's past! But, for the eerie village scenes, this is worth a look!

Dr Who - The Mutants [1972]

starring: Jon Pertwee
February 17, 2003
Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

I have extremely fond memories of the Target novelisation of this Third Doctor and Jo Grant adventure, set on the misty jungle planet of Solos and the Skybase on which its Earth `Overlords' rule. The malignant Marshall and his pet scientist Jaeger are conducting experiments in order to change the climate of the planet Solos and thereby make it more suitable for human habitation. This inevitably brings the Overlords into conflict with the Solonians - and their main progtagonist Ky. When Ky is framed for murder, he escapes the skybase using Jo as a human shield and The Doctor is faced with the task of rescuing his companions and thwarting the Marshall's sinister plans.
Whilst the story is essentially a thinly-veiled allegory concerning British imperialism ... Read More:

The Guyver was released in Japan in 1989, but released by Manga Video in the UK in 1994. As you can see, Japan is five years ahead of us in everything they do. Especially 'cartoons.'

The Guyver is possibly one of the best sci-fi anime next to the likes of Akira, Ghost In The Shell, and (shutters)... DBZ. It also has a uniquely dark, embryonic atmosphere that alot of anime don't have... and is pretty scary if you're a kid and watching it. If you like cartoons and sci-fi, get it.

Doctor Who - The Curse of Fenric [1988] [1963]

directed by: Nicholas Mallett

Sylvester McCoy. Either you like him or you don't.
Some of his stories(like Time and the Rani)
have been preety poor. His relationship with
Ace upto now been not the best. This story(After
perhaps Battlefield) is the best one.
It's set during the second world war and is very confusing at points but it's very gripping.
Sylvester's Doctor as potrayed in this story has sort kept the mystery of William Hartnell, and that's a very strong point, and mainly why I like it.
Plus Nicholhas Parsons is there to keep the
Famous Guest tradition there.

The Star Trek movies are sure to continue entertaining people long after we have all left. This box set provides an excellent opportunity to own part of the Star Trek experience. The presentation of these videos makes them perfect to display in a collection or have on your video shelf.

It's a shame that those without widscreen TV's can't obtain it in thus formatt, however, it losses none of the charm that the movies have. The only other drawback is that the more recent films are not in it and you may choose to wait for a more inclusive set, although there is sure to be many more film releases even after this and how long can you keep waiting.

For Star Trek fans the documentry/history video is worth a watch but it may contain much that you already know. Those ... Read More:
