VHS : Doctor Who - The Daemons [1971]

Doctor Who - The Daemons [1971]

starring: Jon Pertwee
directed by: Christopher Barry
February 13, 1995
Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

This is the best Jon Pertwee Doctor Who series you can can buy. Some of the special effects look dated now, but the brooding atmosphere and demonic creatures left an indelible mark on me as a 10 year old. Another reason for its excellence was one of the earliest appearances of the Master, who was marvellously played by Roger Delgado.

Sadly this still isn't available on DVD. However when it is eventually released it will hopefully include a documentary that was made in the early 1990's when the cast revisted the location the series was filmed at.
If you can get the video at a decent price its definetly worth getting, but I'm waiting for the DVD which will undoubtably be remastered and include the usual quota of commentaries ... Read More:

Doctor Who - The Ark [1966]

starring: William Hartnell, Peter Purves, Jackie Lane
directed by: Michael Imison

An average Hartnell tale. The good Doctor himself turns in the usually high quality performance. Sadly the same cannot be said of his companions. Why did anyone think that Peter Purves could act???

The story itself is typical 60's SF. A nostalgic piece of TV for some, but largely one for the fans only.

Doctor Who - Terror Of The Autons - 30th Anniversary - 1963-93 - Full Reconstructed Colour Version [1971]

Having recently read Doctor Who Magazine's 'Fact of Fiction' feature on this story, I was compelled to revisit it. Dusting down my copy I poured a glass of wine and settled down to see if time had been kinder to this than it has to many Doctor Who serials from Jon Pertwee's tenure. Happily I discovered that it had - the introduction of The Master provided what was to become the greatest fictional rivalry since Sherlock Holmes and Moriarty; Jo Grant's comedic turn as the Doctor's ditzy new assistant was an instant success and the return of the sinister and malevolent Autons provided the icing on the cake. Particular highlights must include the evil doll waking and attacking the factory boss, The Master's killer chair, the Autons in carnival heads distributing ... Read More:

Doctor Who - The Deadly Assassin [1976]

starring: Tom Baker

This is an excellent adventure written by Robert Holmes, probably the best script writer the show ever had, and who wrote some of my favourite episodes including this, plus 'Spearhead From Space', 'The Ark In Space', 'The Brain Of Morbius' - which he co-wrote with Terance Dicks under the pseudonym of Robin Bland, 'The Talons Of Weng Chiang' and 'The Caves Of Androzani'.

The Galifrey set is looking a bit dated now, but it also looked quite low-tech in 1976 as well. What really makes this a special episode for me, is the brilliant plot, plus the Doctor going through the Matrix. The Matrix is an hallaguenic dream sequence with the Doctor facing imaginary threats from the Master, plus also being chased by a Bounty Hunter. The threat scenarios are very ... Read More:

Interesting story, fun run-around, good to see the brig and sarah re-united, and victoria is great! Debbie Watling really excels as the older Victoria, and is given a lot better than she did in the series. Anyway. Maybe its just me.

directed by: David Maloney

The Sontarans are a race of time travelling warriors, who are the original yobs of the Galaxy who like nothing more than a good ruck. In this two-parter the Sontaran is called Styre.

This is the third outing for Tom Baker and the second time round for the Sontarans, and it is written by Bob Baker and Dave Martin. It is set on Earth sometime in the far future, where what was once London, is now a bleak and barren landscape of hills and mountains (this was shot on Dartmoor). The Doctor, Sarah and Harry arrive here, where they come across a small group of humans who are getting captured and then used for sadistic experiments by Styre - the Sontaran. It's enough to put you off fell walking for life! This is a highly enjoyable adventure that has a panoramic feel/quality ... Read More:

What an utter surprise. I expected a dated sci fi flick that had not stood the test of time but I was wrong. This is an exceedingly moving and thought provoking film. It is also the first film in a long time that moved me to tears (anyone who has watched it will know which part I am referring to). It is utterly compelling. Much of the style and imagery may seem familiar at first, until you realise it is because it has been copied by more recent sci fi films. Watch this, it is an original.

It's a shame the previous reviewer wasn't actually paying much attention when watching this story. The Keller machine yes; Krendler machine..? Afraid I've never heard of it!
This is another highlight from the Barry Letts/John Pertwee era of Doctor Who. Having previously only read the Target novelisation I wasn't quite sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. The insidious Master has, using an alter-ego, created a machine that supposedly 'cures' violent criminals and makes them fit for re-integration into society. The Brigadier despatches The Doctor and Jo Grant to witness the first demonstration of the machine in action and they see a hard-core thug become a seemingly sweet and gentle man.
Of course, The Doctor is rightly suspicious, and when people who have been near ... Read More:

great to see both william hartnell and patrick troughton playing their old characters(or is it character?) in a 10 year anniversary of doctor who.
the plot chosen for this is quite good, but seeing troughton and jon pertwee together is a real treat. U.N.I.T are on hand as always to give their support.
a shame that william hartnell had to film his scenes before everyone else; sadly, by this time he was very sick and this programme marked his last acting job. he still acts very well.
the only down side as far as i can see, is that no previous companions make an appearance; it would have been great to see the likes of susan, ian, polly, jamie and zoe etc.
still, a well made story to celebrate 10 years of a true science fiction classic.
