I loved this when I was a kid.
Now I'm old (haha) and have kids of my own.
We sat down together this weekend to watch this film.... I knew it would be good and that the kids would love it, but I had forgotten just how good it really is.
Every scene in the film is intense - exciting, sad, funny, scarey...
There is no let up from begining to end.
One minute you want to cry because all seems lost and the scene is overwhelmingly sad.
The next, your flying on the back of a dragon-dog all excited and enchanted.
Having watched hundreds of films in my lifetime so far - I have to say that this is the best film I have ever seen.
X The Unknown, directed by film buff Barry Norman's father, is a gem. Now available in the full uncut version, despite the low-budget special effects, the film still has the power to chill. It's a great idea, set in a remote part of the UK and does not pull its punches as children die or radiation poisoning, hands melt away before your very eyes, and a giant blob goes on the rampage ! The opening sequences, in which troops on training meet up with 'the thing,' are splendidly low key and imaginatively directed. One of the best of its kind and almost up to the standard of the legendary Quatermass 2

"The Naked Time" is a look at the dangers of exposure to a dangerous virus - a precursor to the horror films of the seventies. "Charlie X" is a little ponderous - poor Janice. Intriguing idea but weak implementation. "Balance of Terror" is superb - the tense atmosphere it creates was only matched decades later on Deep Space Nine's invasion of Cardassia. This episode is the Federations first view of the warlike Romulans and exposes the xenophobia within us all.

Some of the early sixties stuff appears dated at times, and I suppose this film does too to a degree. But then it is a sixties film with sixties characters. The Editor of the newspaper is superb - very convincing and the rest of the cast play there part too. Edward Judd was the lead man however and I have often wondered what happened to him. And Janet Monroe who was one of Britains hot actresses at the time adds the glamour. There has been enough said about this film in other reviews already and I have only done my bit to add five stars for the excellent entertainment this film provided!
