VHS : Doctor Who - The Krotons [1968]

Doctor Who - The Krotons [1968]

starring: Patrick Troughton, Fraser Hines
directed by: David Maloney
February 13, 1995
Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

In my opinion this is Doctor Who at his best and got me into Patrick Troughton. It explores the idea of slavery and the effects of a society not allowed to progress with a civilisation, the Gonds, forbidden to study science and acting as "brain food" for the mechanical Krotons. It also has that BBC 60's style about it where script dominates over visuals. A classic!

With over 150 stories broadcast, opinion is often divided as to which are the best and worst Doctor Who stories. Ofcourse the usual level of consensus, will see Caves of Androzani, somewhere near the top, and Timelash,Time Flight, and Time And The Rani, at the opposite end. But then in the middle you get stories such as Seeds of Death, Ambassadors of Death, and The Planet of Fire, which people seem to give less attention too, they are simply seen as ok. I think Planet of Fire perhaps deserves a little more recognition. In the documentary accompanying The Leisure Hive, reference is made to the producer John Nathan Turner favouring style over storyline, certainly in Planet of Fire, the fantastic location of Lanzorate, does help distract from a ... Doctor Who - Silver Nemesis (The Extended Version) [1988] [1963]

It's hard to believe that "Silver Nemesis" got less than 5 stars average rating. This is an exceptionally good show, especially when you consider that it comes from the Sylvester McCoy era, where most shows were real stinkers! The lovely and attractive Ace is certainly a welcome addition, and the contrasting dialog between her and the Silver Nemesis sent chills up my spine. When Ace says, "Catch you later" to the Silver Nemesis, it's both funny and scary because we know Ace didn't know what to say. If you were faced with the Silver Nemesis you wouldn't know what to say either. It gives us a sense that these characters are very much out of time from each other, and have come together to do what they are suppose to do. Not everyone enjoys this form ... Read More:

OK where to start on this truly horrific crime of a film?

Jar Jar Binks may actually be the worst character in the history of cinema - all those animators and actors who worked to realise this affront to human decency should find a revolver and do the decent thing.

Why do all American kids have problems talking properly? Do they think that speaking like a cutesy 3 year old makes them endearing? Jake whatshisname (Anakin) should never ever be allowed in front of a camera again.

Who came up with the 'story'? My ship is broken, want to come with us, Kid? Seems to be about it.

Also,Why is it that in 'attack of the clones' Anakin has aged about ten years, but Padme is (amazingly) about 3 years older than she was ... Read More:

VHS : Doctor Who - Reign Of Terror

Doctor Who - Reign Of Terror

starring: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton
directed by: Henric Hirsch, John Gorrie

Best Selling > VHS > Science Fiction and Fantasy

This double box set includes the final episodes of Doctor Who that were released on video. The first video consists of the final story from the first season of Doctor Who, entitled The Reign of Terror, and sees the Doctor and his companions arriving at the time of the French Revolution. The second video takes us into the Patrick Troughton's era as the Doctor and consists of The Faceless Ones episodes 1 and 3, and the Web of Fear episode 1 (followed by a few surviving clips from other episodes of the serial.) For me, the highlight of the set is the remaining episode of Web of Fear, with the Yeti lurking in the London Underground. This type of story would ultimately set the scene for other earthbound adventures later in the series.
Sadly, the box set is a disappointment. ... Read More:

Every time I watch this one, it starts off superb but then by episode four it starts to collapse. Patrly because the Metebelis Three people are so stupid and can't act. There are mostly good speical effects all along, and the regeneration is fairly standard, but female spiders?

This is an absolutely excellant box set, it is beautifully presented, icludes cool pictures from the movies and is worth every penny. However it is a shame that all star trek movie box sets including this one have to be in widescreen. Very widescreen.
The aspect ratio is 2.35:1 which is very widescreen. But if you don't mind widescreen and your a trek fan you will not regret buying this.

After reading some of the reviews on this site I wasn't too sure about purchasing this title but I am pleased I did! This has to be one of the very best Doctor Who stories ever! Fantastic acting and direction make this a must for any fan. The twists and turns in the story and the shocking ending are superbly handled and I would recommend this to anyone, even if you are not a regular viewer. Now if only the BBC still made quality programmes like this...
