VHS : Doctor Who - The Awakening/Frontios [1963]

Doctor Who - The Awakening/Frontios [1963]

starring: William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison
March 03, 1997
Best Selling > VHS > VHS

A well written and well produced story, this boasts one of Peter Davison's finest ever portrayals of the Doctor. here is is strong, domineering, quirky, eccentric, funny and manipulative in turns, commanding the screen and dealing with human authorities and nasty, scheming alien creatures with equal amounts of authority. Anyone who thinks davsion is not one of the best Doctors needs look no further than this story to see the emergence of a giant, ready to become an unsurpassed legend just two stories later as he visits a set of titular Caves! Watch it and savour it, it is one of the finest! The dialog alone is a treat to ears! Watch it!

A Christmas Carol [1999]

I remember thinking nine years ago 'What the hell do we need yet another version of A Xmas Carol for' (as great as the story is) and consequently, I avoided watching it. But years roll on quite swiftly, and eventually, I thought I'd give it a go, spurred on mainly by seeing Patrick Stewart on a few chatshows down the years and thinking what a nice bloke he was, completely unshowbizzy. He was without doubt a star in this film version, full of awe at what his ghosts are showing him, and full of humanity when he eventually saw the light.

This is quite a snug and cosy feeling production, with alot of attention paid to little details, and the domestic scenes with Bob Cratchet and family are heartwarming. Stewart plays the character ... Read More:

Barnum [1988]

starring: Michael Crawford
directed by: Peter Coe, Terry Hughes

I love this show. The setting, the way the cast step out of the show to involve the audience in their discussions. You can't help singing along, and within all that, the subtle work (watch out for his wife's departure).
Interestingly, the "mistakes" were identical to the one's that happened when I saw it live. Planned buffoonery.

Don't miss this version.

I am giving this film 5 stars, due to the fact that my 18 year old girlfriend LOVES this film, from when she was really young till now, she puts it on atleast once a week and watches it without blinking an eyelid. She is in total ablis, no control over anything happening around her aslong as Pual is singing those joyess ryhms. Infact, she is watching it now and has no idea that i am writing this, but as to my amusment, i find it very pleasing to do so. This is not a joke as i am totally meaningfull of my 5 stars that i am giving this film.

The Addams Family [1991]

I'm pretty sure the last time I saw this film I must have been less than 6 years old, and now over 13 years later, I caught this film on TV and decided to re-visit the family that, I have been told, as a kid I not only adored watching on film but on the cartoon tv series too. Well, what can I say - I'm sure this stuff must have had some sort of diverse effect on my mental well-being as a child, and I can say honestly had an effect on my sense of humour - I find this kind of stuff hilarious.

Don't get me wrong, this film isn't great by any stretch of the immagination. The plot is horrifically predictable, the film just isn't very exciting, never seeming to go anywhere, never raising my excitement or getting me personally involved. But it is funny ... Read More:

Casablanca [1942]

directed by: Michael Curtiz

This used to be my favourite. I went to see it at a cinema in the 70s, when it was distinctly arthouse. Times change, though. Now the racism grates too much. When it was made I'm sure it was meant to be radical. Rick saying he does not sell human beings when offered a price for Sam might have been cutting edge in '42. Not now.

It does not matter how captivating Ms Bergman is, I cannot see past her using that American racist insult, 'boy'.

Sam, of course, does not even have two dimensions to his character.

Unfortunately i have not read the book 'Swallows and Amazons' by Arthur Ransome, however i really didn't need too, to be able to enjoy this film. It really is a great childrens film and i am actually quite suprised that i had never heard of it before this.

It is about a group of children who go camping on an island with a boat called 'Swallow'. While they are there they have many adventures, among them is their meeting with some pirates, whose boat is called 'Amazon', and together they declare war on a grumpy man who refuses to play with them.

Like 'The Railway Children', i can warm to every character in this film straight away, and i almost felt as though i wanted to be there with them, sailing the boat around the island, and cooking eggs at the camp fire.

directed by: Eric Till

This is a very good film and Brian Dennehy is so convincing as Gacy, The story is very good from start to finish, I highly recommend this film if you are interested in true storys about serial killers as this is one of the best. The other version called "Gacy" is ok but if you want a good true story about John Gacy I would watch this film.
