As the other reviewers have remarked, neither film can be faulted, they are both good old-fashioned adventure yarns which are sadly lacking in the present day. Zero sex or violence, just lashings of ginger beer, steam engines and good old public schoolboy accents.
What lets this release down is presentation. The Railway Children boasts an anamorphic widescreen print which, generally free of dirt, is lacking the full restoration it deserves. Where are the commentaries by the original children, or documentary on how the film was made? This film cries out for supplementary material but doesn't get it.
Swallows and Amazons features a full frame print, coverd in scratches, compression artifacts and is generally very grotty ... Read More:

I first saw this film on TV 20 years ago and am very pleased that it has come out in a crisp DVD version. James Stewart gives a very watchable portrayal of the struggle and triumph of the famous American musician, while June Allyson gives a moving performance that shows that her star on the Walk of Fame is richly merited. The film contains some of Miller's most famous compositions like In the Mood - the climax of this in the film against the background of a German air raid is heartening as well as causing the audience within the film to cheer and applaud. A very enjoyable way to spend the afternoon (or later). Highly recommended.

To me this is the best video Bernard released.Filmed at his own Embassy club in front of a sellout audience this is where he was at his funniest.
Yes he is very 'un pc' but as he used to say "they cant stop us laughing cos its all we got left"
Rude, crude and funny - you will love it.
Yes, it is a great life affirming movie with its heart firmly in the right place...BUT...personally I would have prefered not such a happy ending, or a very different kind of happy ending - I just feel that the miraculous turnaround of George's fortunes at the end, while rightly suggesting that all good deeds may be remembered, and returned in kind, missed a real chance to state that happiness didn't have to depend on material wealth at all - After all, when he was given his old life back, George's euphoric happiness was based soley upon his family and friends, regardless of his dire financial state! This was a real chance to bang the point home about the real dangers of capitalism, but it was totally spurned. Indeed, this ending almost suggested, after roundly attacking ... Read More:

I somehow got to the age of 47 without seeing this all the way through, and sat down to watch it with anticipation. However, I was a bit disappointed. Unlike Life Of Brian this is not really a film with a plot & characters. Rather a series of themed sketches. Like most sketch shows it is a mixture of hit & miss. Bits are indeed very funny, but while this style of humour was radical when the film came out it is all too common now and some of the weaker moments don't stand up so well. Of course it has a place in the pantheon of British comedy and I wouldn't discourage anyone from watching it, but for me it isn't a patch on Life of Brian, or even the Time Bandits.

I hadn't seen this film since I was a child, and didn't have the highest expectations having heard throughly mixed comments surrounding it. I can honestly say that it was an absolutely lovely surprise. No, it isn't completely faithful to the novel, but neither is any other adaptation (not even the much loved 1995 version- I don't remember any scene in the novel where Darcy takes a bath or a dip in the lake), and it's true that the costumes are far more Civil War than English Regency, but this is one of the rare examples in which it doesn't really matter because it's just so charmingly done.
Greer Garson is simply magnificent as Elizabeth Bennet- poised, intelligent, gracious and witty and is excellently matched by Laurence Olivier's Darcy. These two prove that ... Read More:

A charming and exceedingly Christmassy story that will delight all ages. The animation is beautiful and the narration and voices spot on for the story.
I would like to point out a mistake made in the "synopsis" on this page. It was not, as is written there, fairies that come to the aid of the poor tailor, but MICE.
