VHS : The Great Race [1965]

The Great Race [1965]

starring: Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Keenan Wynn
directed by: Blake Edwards

I've always liked this film and thought it a great pity there had been no Region 2 release on DVD.
This cracking tale of dastardly deeds and deceit is a marvellous race to reach the next gag. And there is never long to wait!!
Through a plethora of cultures and engaging social backgrounds, the tale never seems to peak, until the fantastic pie fight.
A well re-mastered film, although the soundtrack did seem to fade in places.
However, top marks.

My mum bought this film for me along with My Fair Lady and Seven Brides For Seven Brothers when i had been intrested in theatre and musicals for a while. Now, don't get me wrong the other two are amazing, but this is just top-notch! Along with The Sound Of Music, this is not only my favourite musical, but also my favourite film of all time! It's just a classic, and they never go out of date. Even though i wasn't alive when this first came out, i love it all the same. And Allyn McLerie gives a good performance as Katie Brown too. I watch this film so much. It's brill. And great fun for the whole family. Good to watch with grandparents as they will remember it from their childhood! A Must see!

CLASSIC Who, nice Jon Pertwee story with a Welsh mining community and countryside crawling with giant maggots that make you wither and die if they touch you. Has a bit with a nice, funny disguise for Pertwee. This story is the departure of companion Jo Grant, who falls in love!
And the Doctor whizzes around in his car "Bessie" again.
Worthwile!

Billy Connolly - Live At The Apollo [1994]

starring: Billy Connolly
directed by: Nobby Clark
September 26, 1994

This is my favourite of all the Billy Connolly videos I have seen so far. Billy covers a multitude of topics from dogs to diahorrea with his usual spot on obsevations and anecdotes.
Sure he swears a lot during his shows but he never uses this profanity for a cheap laugh or to be crude (although he does cover what some may see as taboo subjects)
I've watched this video many times over and I always find myself crying with laughter, especially at the part where Billy describes a rather unfortunate incident that happened while on holiday in Spain!!!
Excellent stuff from Billy...highly recommended!!

Breaking Glass [1980]

starring: Phil Daniels, Hazel O'Connor, Jon Finch, Jonathan Pryce, Peter-Hugo Daly
directed by: Brian Gibson
April 10, 1995
Best Selling > VHS > VHS

Lovely punkette chanteuse Hazel O'Connor plays a blinder in the somewhat autobiographic role of Kate, desperate to succeed, whilst maintaining her ethics, in the cut-throat music business.

Hazel's brilliant songs are enough to recommend this movie in its own right but, unlike some musicals, Breaking Glass is far more than just a vehicle to promote the artiste's work. The sense of unease stoked by the rise of neo-Nazi and anarchic groups in late 70's/early 80's urban England and the shadier side of the music industry are expertly recreated here.

Furthermore, Hazel's depiction of the roller-coaster rise to stardom, resulting in mental breakdown, is impeccably observed. Why this hugely talented woman's career as an actress never really ... Read More:

Film review of Matilda (1996)
Star rating-\\\gg

Matilda was originally written as a children¡¦s novel by Roald Dahl (tales of the unexpected) in 1988. His wry wit and humour certainly makes the book an enjoyable read and this humour still shows in Danny DeVito¡¦s movie version of the novel with a contrast of both American and English actors.

The film is about a young girl called Matilda played wonderfully by Mara Wilson (Miss Doubtfire). Though at the time, Wilson was fairly new to the acting scene; her acting skills still comes across as charming.

Another great actor in the film is the director, Danny DeVito (Mars Attacks), who also plays both the narrator and Matilda¡¦s father. DeVito is both clever and witty throughout ... Read More:
