VHS : Three Shorts By Hal Hartley [1989]

Three Shorts By Hal Hartley [1989]

starring: Martin Donovan, Matt Malloy, Rebecca Nelson, Bob Gosse, Jessica Sager
directed by: Hal Hartley
March 21, 1994
Best Selling > VHS > World Cinema

The first of these shorts 'Surviving Desire' (which is considerably longer than the other two) is arguably Hartley's most perfectly realised film and most rewarding. Donovan is brilliant as the melancholic English professor caught between existential crisis and carnal desire, while the supporting cast are also superb. As with his other works formal story is merely a prop to support the characters and their beautifully mannered speech. Questions of love, faith and the burden of possessing abstract knowledge in the face of mundane, daily life are all explored with wit, humanity and a hip sensibilty. Woody Allen for the rock and roll generation. Don't hesitate - buy it.

This film without a doubt is one of my all time favourites, i was a fan of the video game, i remember staying over at my cousins when i was 4 and we would play the mario games for hours and when i heard they were makin a film i couldnt wait.

i remember watching this film for the first time and immediatly loved it, the film doesnt keep in touch with the games all that much, but that in no way makes this a bad film, who cares if it doesnt keep to the games, films like that normally suck, may i remind people of resident evil or even mortal combat or recently doom.

the actors in the main roles are pefectly cast, especially bob hoskins and dennis hopper, with great support from john leuizamo and samantha mathis, even iggy ... Read More:

VHS : Shadow Skill - The Movie

Shadow Skill - The Movie

from: Manga Entertainment
October 13, 1997
Best Selling > VHS > World Cinema

unless you have watched the shadow skill series (or plan to) this movie seems very short and the story seems a bit thin and rushed. the relationships between the main characters is not developed very well and it doesnt leave u thinking at the end, unlike films like akira or ghost in the shell. if u just want to see a bit of fighting or blood or you are a fan of the series then buy it.

VHS : Le Colonel Chabert [1995]

Le Colonel Chabert [1995]

starring: Gérard Depardieu, Fanny Ardant, Fabrice Luchini, André Dussollier, Daniel Prévost
directed by: Yves Angelo
October 02, 1995
Best Selling > VHS > World Cinema

Depardieu brings all his talents to the part of Chabert. Sadly he is too often betrayed by his well-fed frame and beaming smile to be convincing.

The sets and costumes are perfect, and the character of Derville the lawyer is exeptionally well concieved and performed.

This is a tale of misfortune and misery, yet there was no display of tears, no fits of anger, no display of love.

The story is provocative, you are left wanting so much to know about the lead characters, but in the end you know nothing but their public facade.

If you want an entertaining movie give it a miss, if you are looking for something provocative then it is worth a watch.

VHS : Urotsukidoji - Legend Of The Overfiend

Urotsukidoji - Legend Of The Overfiend

starring: Bick Balse, Christopher Courage, Rebel Joy, Yasunori Matsumoto, Lucy Morales
directed by: Hideki Takayama
November 02, 1992
Best Selling > VHS > World Cinema

Urotsuki Doji has been the target of much hate since it first appered in the west, but in the UK is this hate needed? Some would say yes, others no, I say it is up to the individual to decide, but for my own reasoning, I am against censorship to a degree.

This covers episodes 1 - 3 of the series, though heavily editied into the Legend of the Overfiend movie. The plot remains intact, but much of the nastier scenes have been edited out for the UK market. Hunt down an import for the full version (available in the USA in a box set), but only if you have a strong stomach. A worthy addition to any anime collection, but only if you note the true intention of the series, to investigate the weakness of the human condition.

with his thirst for blood.this movie is not just a remake of the 1922 max shreck original but a tribute to both it & bram stokers novel dracula.

Beefcake [1999]

starring: Daniel MacIvor, Joshua Peace, Carroll Godsman, joe dallesandro
directed by: Thom Fitzgerald
August 07, 2000
Best Selling > VHS > World Cinema

Beefcake is a fascinating docu-drama into the beginnings of gay porn in the USA.

Bob Mizer is a man with a mission. He loves taking photographs of hunky nude men, and soon discovers that there are plenty of straight guys willing to get their kit off in front of the camera and plenty willing to buy the magazines and photographs that feature these men!

The film features a dramatic portrayal of the events as they unfold, cut with recent interviews of some of the models; the fun times they had, the enjoyment pride they still have in baring all for art.

'Beefcake' is an enjoyable, if not a little long, movie and a great record of what is an important era for gay erotica. Filled with actual footage of many of the models posing, and plenty of ... Read More:

Performance [1970]

starring: James Fox, Mick Jagger, Anita Pallenberg, Michèle Breton, Ann Sidney
directed by: Nicolas Roeg, Donald Cammell
August 16, 1993

I can't imagine for a single minute that anyone would be buying this DVD if they hadn't first seen the movie, so if you're reading this you probably know what it's all about. Psychadelic cool and London Gangster cool meet in a movie with a story, and with some incredibly beautiful and totally believable characters. It's maybe twenty years since I first saw this but it still makes me want to take a can of black spray paint to my bedroom walls and act so aloof that exquisite foreign women can't resist my rock star charms. It does what a good movie should, it removes you from your humdrum existence and transports you the other world that you always thought you belonged to. Wonderful.
