VHS : Cinema Paradiso [1989]

Cinema Paradiso [1989]

This is my favourite film of all time, but the director's cut is over explained. The original was perfect. You don't need to know what happened between Salvatore and his first love. What you really need to know is all there in the shorter version. I was horrified when I watched the director's cut, it became a trite film, without the magic of the version I knew and loved. If anything, the longer version would suit american audiences better, as everything is explained to death.

The central premise of "Bamboozled" directed by Spike Lee is a good one. The final result is not. Having watched most of Spike Lee's recent work I am struck by his obvious lack of faith in the intelligence of American viewing public. He has become so literal a director that nothing is allowed to be ambiguous for fear that the audience will misconstrue the specific agenda. This Spike Lee admits in the commentary of his film by having the Webster's definition of Satire recited by the lead actor.

The simplistic, amateurish and self-conscious direction was evident from the opening scenes especially the ones involving the two young protagonists in their tenement squat.

One of the most important parts of making a Motion Picture ... Read More:

Un Chien Andalou and L'age D'or embrace all the principles of surrealism, and are vivid examples of the power of cinema to express the power, uniqueness and oddness of dreams. If you're looking for a normal, Hollywood style, plot driven movie, then these films aren't for you - there is very little, if any, plot to either of the films, and searching for meaning or attempting to empathise with the characters will only cause confusion. Surrealist films are intended to be viewed as explorations of the unconscious, and as sets of images that may or may not have relevance to each other. They were also intended as a reaction against Hollywood and its mass market appeal.

The first film, Un Chien Andalou, is only 16 minutes long, and is not for the squeamish. ... Read More:

I have watched the film first in a film festival. If the festival showed this film only it would be enough. Later I have read the book also. The book is written by Greek writer Vasilius. The political environment is in Greece but same everywhere in the world. The left is always chased and harassed. The aggressors are organized illegally but receive police and government shelters. Those who try to investigate the events in an unprejudiced way are either bought or sacked or killed in the way. The film is a hit! All star cast deserves all the applause, also praise to Costa Gavras.

First, an explaination of my summary. If you're a shy, sweet, romantic, caring guy with an equally cute girlfriend, this is the perfect video!
Not that I have a boyfriend, but if I did and he gave me this, aw! *_* (starry-eyed)
This is innocent young romance with comedy. It's all so sweet and sugary, you can't help feeling all awed! The funny bits had me laughing my head off and the starting and ending songs in Japanese just made you hum along and want to learn the words!
It's probably easier to obtain the DVD version since it contains both subbed and dubbed versions and is easier to find.
You'll want to buy the whole series to find out ust how Keiichi gets on with Belldandy.
Oh My Goddess! Is just a magical series and I just can't help loving it, ... Read More:

Ah! Megami-sama (Oh! My Godess) wins first place in my top anime list. The five-part series is everything it should be: funny, well-planned, gripping and detailed (in animation as well as plot). This episode stands out from the rest, not only because it ties up the story (it's wonderful when you suddenly spot all the references made in previous episodes) but the style changes dramatically from a series of not-too-tense plot twists into one massively heart-wrenching climax - even if you thought the first four episodes were a bit soft, you'll enjoy this one. In case you're unfamiliar with the story, the series features shorter-than-average student Keichi Morisato who dials a wrong number and gets a goddess for life. Her sisters arrive and the group experiences several amusing events. Soon, ... Read More:
