This film would make my top ten films of all time. It is superb. The acting is first class and the story extremely funny even if a little predictable. My only slight gripe is that the storyline is VERY similar to a Gary Cooper film of the 1930s and I'm not sure this is acknowledged.

Having devoured Channel 4's series on TV and bought the books for my daughter years later, I have been re-living the 'tales' over Christmas on video (eps 1-3) but am in 'limbo' as I can't progress to More Tales of the City until I track down eps 4-6 of the first Tales series!! Where are they ??? I think we should be told!

The only thing that can really be said for this film is that it proved Nureyev could act. I would like to see a new version of Valentino's life as it clearly has the potential to make a really good film - but this isn't it

If this was a real foreign film, as in not even slightly linked to Britain, it would have been more detailed in its exeperiences and depiction of how sex can be used as a means of communication, or lack of. This films fails to do either. Its about a guy who gives up his calm lifestyle when his cousin comes over to visit. She gets him up to all things no good. But why on earth did you have to seduce him-he's your cousin for God sake?! Take my advice, read a book or something, but don't watch this film. Life is precious, dont waste it watching this stupidity!

I just love this film and I still haven't made up my mind, whether I prefer Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables" with Lino Ventura as Jean Valjean to Claude Lelouch's version with Jean-Paul Belmondo as Jean Valjean or vice-versa.
The film, which tells a kind of 20th century version of "Les Misérables", refers along the whole movie to Victor Hugo's "Les Misérables". Moreover in the film Henri Fortrin II watches an old film of "Les Misérables" as a child, when he lives at Guillaume's inn with his mother, and later on in the film he watches another version of "Les Misérables" (during World War II when he is with the guys of the Résistance). If not Tati's best film (that honor would probably go to Mon Oncle), this 1953 effort is certainly his funniest, as Mr. Hulot's (Tati) presence in a French resort provokes one disaster after another. The movie is deliberately paced, with little dialogue and full of gentle humor. In fact, the film's innocence would be very hard to recreate today (the movie looks irresistibly nostalgic now, as it evokes a certain time and period that no longer exists). You might think that this is not a recipe for an uproariously funny comedy, but despite that, you just can't stop laughing at Tati's very elaborate set pieces. It's a huge improvement over Tati's previous film, the somewhat overrated Jour de Fete.
