This early Wan Kar Wai masterpiece is considerably lighter but touches on many of his favorite themes (including isolation, unrequited love) and the two stories are woven together loosely. Absolutely essential movie for anyone who considers themselves a lover of HK cinema.

Others have written about being moved to tears by this movie, and certainly when it originally played in London it became a kind of group therapy for its (largely gay) audience. Maybe if you are carried along on a wave of collective emotion, it could be very powerful, but watching a DVD at home somehow seems a more clinical experience. You pause to go to the toilet or make a coffee or whatever; you can reverse to scenes, or to remind yourself, or whatever. And that kind of communal experience is lost.
So I have to say that this is a very manipulative movie, and I found myself resenting it. The characters have little depth, the boy is unbearably cute, especially as a girl - would we have so much sympathy with an ugly transsexual, ... Read More:

This willfully mysterious 1997 movie from David Lynch has been most convincingly described as a fugue - in music, a piece in which one theme is followed by another, with the first lingering in the backdrop as a counterpoint, or alternatively as a flight from reality into amnesia.
I frequently watch Lost Highway every year and i still walk away from it scratching my head in utter confusion yet i still feel entertained by it.
This is my favourite film of all time, but the director's cut is over explained. The original was perfect. You don't need to know what happened between Salvatore and his first love. What you really need to know is all there in the shorter version. I was horrified when I watched the director's cut, it became a trite film, without the magic of the version I knew and loved. If anything, the longer version would suit american audiences better, as everything is explained to death.

To collect money for an investment, Jerry (Macy) sets a fake operation up for the kidnap of his wife, but it doesn't go according to plan.
The Coen brothers have made a name for themselves over the past twenty years and this 1996 film, written and directed by the pair cements them into the highest class of different and brilliant filmmakers.
The unusual plot opens with "This is based on a true story" when in fact it isn't, which will set the tone for a bizarre but highly intriguing viewing, made even more strange as the plot unfolds and the direction and cinematography are established.
This whole ideology of kidnapping gives the Coen brothers a great chance to dive deep into their unknowing way of thinking, and is expressed through ... Read More:

This is a beautifully made, moving film depicting the harsh regime of the Khmer Rouge communist revolutionaries in 1970's Cambodia. The film focuses on the real-life relationship between Cambodian Dith Pran and American journalist Sidney Schanberg. The acting is superb, particularly from Dr. Haing S Ngor who played the part of Dith Pran and who did himself survive the Killing Fields.
In my opinion, it is necessary to have a background knowledge of the political events during this time (eg. the Cambodian government being overthrown by the Khmer Rouge and the subsequent evacuation of the cities) as without this, the film may be confusing in parts. However, this DVD does helpfully give the viewer the option to choose a brief historical recounting of the events of this time, and ... Read More:

It takes some getting into, not helped by the quality of the VHS tape, which was a bit ropey in parts. It's also too long. You could cut out the first 20 minutes-or-so and not miss them. And it must be said it takes some getting used to having characters from the Arabian Nights talking in Italian! But on the whole this is enjoyable and deliciously different, and after a while I even stopped wishing for Ray Harryhausen's monsters to appear! It is also genuinely erotic, with plenty of shots of nubile good-looking Italians locked in passionate clinches in shaded rooms and tents, or in bath-tubs. The demon is laughable when he first appears, looking like a geriatric rent-boy who's seen better days, but he becomes effective. The most stunning part though was as the young man dons his ragged ... Read More:

'The Big Lebowski' has been dubbed a 'cult' movie and with reason. It is a movie for a very specific clientele and one that is likely to disappoint a more mainstream audience.
First of all, it is not THAT funny. It definitely has its good moments thank to the script and the more than able cast. But don't be fooled: those moments are the exception and not the norm.
The movie seems to be too pleased with itself and it certainly falls short of the comic brilliance of 'Fargo'. The storyline is never plausible and after a while one fails to be even mildly interested with all the twists and turns of its kinky plot.
It is perhaps the quality acting that saves the whole enterprise in spite of its very obvious shortcomings. All in all, an interesting if disappointing ... Read More:

Greenaway's films are always watchable for the cinematography, but in this one you can actually follow the story too. The plot is fairly simple but is padded out with descriptions of peculiar games that Madgett, the Suffolk coroner, and his strange son Smut invent to pass the time. Smut also celebrates any violent death (whether roadkill or drowned husbands) by painting a number at the scene and letting off fireworks. Yellow paint for Tuesdays, red paint for Saturdays (Tuesday is winning, being the best day for violent deaths). You can also try to count the ascending numbers from 1-100 that are placed in each scene. I only saw about half of them - some are well hidden.
There isn't a DVD version of the film available in the UK at the moment, but the Australian DVD (with UK FilmFour logo!) ... Read More:
