It's been a good few years since I last hopped on a deck and ground my way around Alcatraz Island collecting S.K.A.T.E, ollie-ing over prison warders and getting "big air". Frankly I thought those joyful days were over.
Circumstances continue to surprise me.
Firstly I won a PS3 in a competition where I actually wanted to win the car or holiday. Secondly I spied a pre-owned copy of "Project 8" in a well known DVD rental shop. A moment of weakness and all the pieces came together.

The old magic is still there.
From my embarassingly shaky start in the tutorial mode, when I suddenly realised my fingers had forgotten how to pull off a 3 trick combo, I gradually improved and progressed into the first true game area ... Read More:

Video Games : Stranglehold (PS3)

Stranglehold (PS3)

This game has all sorts of problems. The graphics aren't special and Tequilas animations are laughable. The dumb thing is - and i know it sounds crazy - these make the game.

It's not even a difficult game. You leap, run, dive and bullet-time your way through Stranglehold and tread on a healthpack with everystep. But again, thats the charm. The game is so one dimensioned save for four special moves, including one where Tequila will more or less gun down everyone in the room without even having aim.

No innovation, barely mentionable story, one dimensional gameplay. Whats to like about this game you ask? Simple fun. You go from level to level just gunning down badguys in a few different ways, but i love it.

This game is ok. The missions are not bad and the graphics are alright. Got bored after a while and have only played half the game and im not rushing to play the other half. If you can afford this game then its worth a buy but if your strapped for cash just dont bother.

What I noticed was that this is a very rushed attempt to gain a place in the undercrowded PS3 market before burnout arrived... but now that it has there's very little point to this game, unless you really want guns on cars! Which burnout doesn't have.... something else i noticed is that the car on the cover has chop-shopped BMW 5-series headlights.

I picked this up in a bargain bin and it is where it belongs. To be fair the graphics are ace but it is the only thing going for it.

First up the camera. Or lack of it. There isn't one. As a result half the time you can't see the enemy so you need to use the map to fight your opponent standing in front of you. Then there is the controls. You character can't run straight and there is a delay between your command and the character moving. Excellent in the heat of battle? There are plenty of these. All you do is hack 'n' slash. Once you think you've cleared an area another 10 or 20 enemy magically appear. It is a relentless slog.

Then the music. Utter rubbish that picks up the pace to a thundering drone when things get heavy ... Read More:

This is one of those "so close" cases, where so much was done right that those few things that went wrong are even more glaring.
Among the things it does right are presentation elements like the visuals, the commentaries, the presentation, the athmosphere - it's all top notch. The controls and handling is also quite good, no obvious camera bugs, drops, framerates or other such issues to notice. Various gameplay types look both deep & varied, at least up front (haven't really investigated each of them that well yet), which admittedly can be viewed as either a good or a bad thing depending on what you as a player are looking for.
So why not give this one full marks, then? Well, my main reasons for plucking those two stars of the ratings are the following:
The menus and navigation ... Read More:

Very solid game with tremendous amount of value for money. Many different modes and extras. Season and Franchise gives the game an enormous amount of longevity and you can really work hard on getting your team to the top. On the negatives and after playing it regularly for some months, unlocking certain teams is a bit more challenging that needed. Also, some of the loading sequence gets a bit dull. Menus could have been a bit more animated. Practise challenges, Fighting and injury animation during the matches always ends the same way and some randomizing of graphics would make it a bit more enduring. I miss some of the gore from Sega's Hockey game but maybe this is because I have not unlocked 60's and 70's teams (one of the reasons why I still am playing the game :-))
