The C5180 printer is an excellent piece of hardware. It prints accurately, with good colour and is fast. I have not done much copying, but when I have, it does this well too. Unfortunately, when it comes to scanning, it is dire - truly dire.
As I have read on numerous sites, HP markets excellent printer hardware, but the accompanying software is regularly woeful. Unfortunately for me, the C5180 is exactly one of those combinations. The scanning of pictures results in a "salt & pepper" type effect and there is no way changes to software, resolution, depth of colour, etc, will get you where you want your scans to be. After doing research on the internet I finally decided to go for the HP C6280. I have been an HP fan since I started with computers 12 years ago. My workhorse 840C was finally rebelling and I had to make a decision. Some people reported difficulty setting up the machine so I went along with the idea that I would follow the instructions faithfully, which I did. However I couldn't get passed the Install Hardware Wizard however hard I tried. After 4 hours of uninstalling previous HP items, reinstalling the C6280, or trying to, I finally e-mailed HP for help. They came back to me within 2 hours with "help". I say help in inverted commas because it seemed to me that it was just what I had already done. However I decided to go back a couple of ... Once i struggled with the X15 from the box yes its pretty weighty, but I soon found out it was on castors which made moving it about a delight, the instruction book is pretty poor, but as I have had previous shredders I didnt need too much tuition, once set up its a delight and extremly quiet Im hoping as this shredder was a bit more expensive initialy that it will outlast my other two shredders as they always seem to fail on me after a few years,time will tell.
