Polarising filters are magical things. They can reduce reflections from non metallic surfaces with merely a twist of the ring!
Another use of polarising filters is to enhance colour saturation. Have you ever seen a photograph with the deepest blue sky you've ever seen and wondered how the photographer did it? Have you ever looked at your own pale blue, wishy washy skies and thought how on earth do I do this!?!? Look no further.
By turning the ring on a circular polariser you can adjust the amount of the effect it will create. They work best when the lens is pointed at 90 degrees to the sun, in other words the sun is on your left or right, not in front or behind. I recently bought a USB mixer to record at home with my mic and bought this as an after thought. I am so glad I did - it's brilliant. Not only does it stop "pops" but it does a good overall job of filtering out breaths between lines and general peaking on the recording. You end up with recordings of an even sound.
I had this attached to my mic stand from when I started recording so I didn't immediately notice the difference. After recording a few tracks I took it off to see if it was having an impact on my tracks. The levels on the 'line-in' spiked immediately and the recording was far less even.
It's easy to fit to my mic-stand, light weight, and easily adjustable. I 100% recommend this product for any at home recording.

Protect your lens with a filter. Not much experience, but this set of filter has not affected picture quality on my D40x. Actually lost my lens cap, so the filter saved my lens! Alternative would be Hoya pro range, but suitably more expensive
