This is an excellent purchase, what would you get for under a fiver nowadays? As a novice gardener I found the chapters on planning the gardening year and getting the most from your land absolutely vital. This guide covers the basics in a very comprehensive manner indeed and although a little lacking in the visual side of things the quality of information contained more than compensates. The brief guide to vegetables is excellent and I can safely say this guide will continue to be used as a reference even after my garden is well established.Worth every penny.

Because this book is a bit on the large side and has some fantastic photos it seems to double as a coffee table book and an instruction manual . Its an excellent book and Alan Titchmarsh is at his best here .
The first sixty or so pages is concerned with what Alan calls the ground rules and you get advice on everything from planning and design to feeding and composting . The rest of the book contains the directory where you get a run down on all the common fruit veg and herbs found in most gardens . Now this is pretty comprehensive so expect a little information overload . But personally I think its great to have all this info under the one cover . Definitely a book I will continue to refer to again and again .

So many people take an allotment plot on with great intentions - then realise the commitment and aren't able to keep it up. This book provides all the information that could be needed to manage your plot in minimum time. This means it's not necessarily for everyone - those who are able to spend long days on their plot may not feel that it's applicable to them. But I'd suggest that the book still contains plenty of hints, tips and advice on how to get the best from your plot.

This book is neither one thing nor t'other. It is not a hand-holding guide to setting up your allotment step-by-step, and it is certainly not a reference book. It has helped give me a few ideas, and most vegetables are covered, but it's infuriatingly difficult to find what you need, and leaves you guessing in vital areas. The tone is nice, and friendly, and soft, and unintimidating for a beginner, but the information is something of a damp squib.

I bought this book as I am a keen cook who is on the waiting list for an allotment. I thought it would be interesting to see how this book bought those two aspects together. I knew little about Paul Merrett but have seen him on a couple of food magazine type programmes.
As a diary/account of how to (or is that not to?) start an allotment I found it generally amusing and interesting. However, not as good as Allotted Time: Two Blokes, One Shed, No Idea, a book which Merrett mentions. There isn't enough real detail to help you avoid the pitfalls that Merrett himself makes, but maybe thats the whole idea of having an allotment and learning from your own mistakes. The story, which covers just over a year, flows well and held my attention enough ... Read More:

I've been wanting to make preserves for years, but I've only just started to do it. Loving the whole River Cottage ethos, I was naturally interested in this book. I read some great reviews and so I bought it, and IMO it's just as wonderful as others said it was.
There's a wealth of inspiring recipes, many of which come with suggestions for modifications which can be made by those who have different ingredients/would like to use something slightly different. Everything is clearly explained, and the photographs just make me want to go down to the kitchen and eat up every last preserve in the fridge!
This book is an absolute inspiration. I'd defy anyone even very slightly interested in making their own jams, chutneys, pickles etc not to ... Read More:
