Olly, her brother Matt & Hero are the star cast of this story which neatly & sensitively draws childrens attention to the war victims of Africa & the on-going problem of landmines.
Well written & easy to read. Provides a good platform for developing readers to expand from.
3 stars probably not enough ... just not enough options to choose.
It is about a man who helps Jewish children across the mountains to a place where they are safe during WW2 whilst waiting for his own daughter, Anya. The story did get a little bit confusing in places, though.

I read this book to my class of 28 Year 4 children (aged 8-9) as a sideline to our literacy unit on World War 2. I read a chapter each day and the children were begging me to read the next chapters as the days went on! We created a class journal looking at characters, settings, descriptions, predictions, letter writing, reasoning, decision making, consequences and many other things. It was a great book that opened so many options for some fantastic work for the children. They enjoyed it greatly, and so did I.
I should also add that this is a great book for any child to read and enjoy outside of the school setting!

`Why the Whales Came' is another amazing book from children's laureate, marvellous Michael Morpurgo.
It tells the story of two children growing up in the Isles of Scilly (Bryher). From the cradle, Gracie and Dan have been warned not to go near a mysterious man named the "Birdman". However, when they are forced to use a forbidden beach, strange messages start appearing in the sand...
We are only nine years old and this is one of our favourite books. We would give it four stars because it is so good. It's packed with action and excitement. It leaves you with tons of different emotions and feelings. You'll for yourself if you read the book.

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever read. It tells a tale of a normal boy who went off to fight in the war. It is the journey to his death. The story made me cry so much and even as i'm writing this it brings a lump to my throat. It made me to realise even more so, that we have to remember all those brave people who gave their lives for their country.

What a shame that a good story was spoilt by inappropriate language . The subject matter of a sick child, dog and football were all highly appealing to a young child beginning to read. Sadly the age group at which this book is aimed are also very impressionable and to include bad language at this age is unnecessary.

I am a year 6 pupil and in English we read "The Wreck of the Zanzibar". I took it home and read it in 1 hour and 30 minutes because it was so exciting! I had a Michael Morpurgo book from a friend when I was only 6, and I didn't appreciate it. I love Michael's books and hopefully I am having one for Christmas!

As I read this book I just couldn't get enough of it and I loved Grania o'Malley. when Jessie called out for her I just wished she would turn up and help her through her problems. When Jack first came into the story I didn't like him too much but as the story developed he became my favorite character. When I was reading this book I was dying to find out what happened but as I got towards the end I started to read it slower as I didn't want the book to end.
