I recommend this book as an excellent starting point for home made meals. Everything can be made with cheap and fresh ingredients and there's bound to be plenty of recipes in there that are new to you.
The recipes are easy to make and once you get used to them, just as quick as getting a takeaway.

This book does not assume you have a large array of ingredients lurking in your fridge/cupboard as some other 'easy' books do. It's simple, good hearty meals anyone can make. An excellent choice for the beginner cook.

I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years, surviving on pizza & ready meals & have just started living with a meat-eater, what do i do??!! i bought this book a couple of months ago & already i need a replacement as mine is so dog-eared & covered in goodness knows what ingredients! It has a fabulous choice of tasty, easy to cook recipes that are cheap to make. Mine & my friends' favourites are the Oriental Tuna casserole & my boyfriend's is the Hungarian Goulash, and as he's half Hungarian i was so very proud to be able to make this for him, i didn't let on how easy it was!! It's also such excellent value for money it would be criminal not buy it!

I bought this book quite a while ago but have only recently got the cooking bug! A great variety of recipes, nicely separated into different chapters according to what eqipment you need to make them, e.g. one pan, 2 pans + grill, whole kitchen, etc.
A few complaints though, I would prefer some simpler recipes, needing fewer ingredients, so there is no need to buy things you would only use once or twice. Also, there are no pictures in this book, which I like to have so I know my food looks like it should, without having to rely on just the recipe instructions.

This book is a typical student cook book with some good little meals that anyone could follow, you really don't have to be smart to follow the recipes.
But... if you just stick to the basic ingredients that it uses the meals really do not come out that tasty. I have had countless tasteless meals out of this book - if you have a bit more skill in the cooking department I recommend looking further afield and trying some cook books such as Nigella Lawson or just finding the relevant information on the internet - there are hundreds of cooking websites out there.

This book really gets back to the basics of cookery. It is a 'no frills' guide that tells you all the things you wish you could remember from your mother's cooking. The simple recipes give good results and give you the confidence to go on to develop and adapt them. Highly recommended.

I got a copy of this book in the old cover style and it has definitely been a lifesaver.
All the recipes are easy, you don't need any fancy equipment and the dishes range from incredibly cheap to something to splash out on (Like the vodka chili!!) although the majority of them will definitely not break the bank.
Although it is a student cookbook I'd recommend it to anyone as some meals are impressive enough to serve to guests, but it also has fun family meals as well. All quantities are for 2 people so easy to divide or multiply up as well. I also like the snacks and standbys section at the end which has great lunchtime recipes.

When my mother gave me this book as a leaving present I did at first feel a little skeptical of its promises... well the title had a lot to live up to. However, having poured over this book during my train journey up to Manchester I kind of got the impression that this book had been written from experience rather than to simply make a fast buck. The sections are clear, the information useful and honest. I loved the section on Hedonism!
I especially liked the section on housing. Being a student and leaving home for the first time I found the information invaluable.
This is the one time my mother got it right. I think they should give it out on fresher's week.
