Nice book with lots of photos. Unfortunately the much of the information with regard to photos did not mention the breed of birds shown. I would have liked to have more detail in the captions. Some of the specific breeds mentioned had no photo at all. I wasn't interested in the chapter on crafts.
My husband preferred this book to "The Right Way to Keep Chickens" by Virginia Shirt because it was easier to absorb and photo's are much better than drawings. He said it was a good book, I am hard to please!

This is a very usefull book for those just thinking of or beginning to keep pet chickens, it gives a short guide to the most popular breeds, good housing advice, and also pointers on keeping your flock happy and healthy. The only downfall I think is that it falls short on advice on sexing your chicks, I would have found that really usefull as my hens hatched 5 this summer. However, I recommend this book to all backyard flock keepers!

A standard work often provided in starter kits and it covers the basics in a simple easy to read fashion. Katie Thear is an experienced keeper and she includes some useful tips she's picked up from her own experiences. However I find the subject poorly researched and the information rather sketchy in places and lacking in consistency. It's rather like she has written it just from her own knowledge and experiences only. Some areas she dwells on in uneccessary detail for beginners needs while others which need a more detailed explaination are just skimmed over. There's also some uneccessary padding with brief chapters on showing and breeding which aren't of much interest to beginners and don't contain enough detail to enable anyone to get involved ... I found this book very informative and well put together. It has excellent photograrphs and discriptions of how to tend to the chickens. A must if you are to keep chickens.

Any true DIY enthusiast should be able to read diagrams and be familiar with both Imperial and Metric measures. If in doubt about measurements, just pull out a tape rule and learn. I find this a very good book that does exactly what it sets out to do - show you how to build simple poultry houses with the minimum of fuss.
It would have been handy to have the total lengths of wood required for each coop stated, but unless you intend to build every one in the book, adding up the bits isn't too big a job. B&Q have packs of wood with the dimensions in both Metric and Imperial, but Wickes are much cheaper, and timber yards cheapest and most likely to have the exact sizes you want.

when this supposed book arrived i was not happy with it,i read the whole thing from cover to cover in a matter of a 30mins it is only a leflet in my eyes not worth the money or the postage, its something you would get free at farm store in america!!!!
A concise, informative book with plenty of advice on chicken health, breeding, housing etc along with some really good egg recipes in part 2 of the book. An excellent buy for anyone starting out in small scale chicken keeping. The little stories at the end of the book are fun too.

This is an excellent purchase, what would you get for under a fiver nowadays? As a novice gardener I found the chapters on planning the gardening year and getting the most from your land absolutely vital. This guide covers the basics in a very comprehensive manner indeed and although a little lacking in the visual side of things the quality of information contained more than compensates. The brief guide to vegetables is excellent and I can safely say this guide will continue to be used as a reference even after my garden is well established.Worth every penny.

This book has hastily drawn sketches with vague measurements and some pictures. If you are looking for chicken coop plans then don't let the title mislead you - it's a lie. Plans, in my understanding, give the details required to make an item, not just some scrawly overview. Artistic license gone wrong! Absolute rubbish! Should get minus five stars! DO NOT BUY!!!!!
