I really like this cookbook, it's the only one I own that I go back to again and again. It would make a great buy or gift for someone who wants to learn to cook but doesn't know where to start. The lack of photos makes the book seem dull but I've come to prefer it, there are no cheffy presentations to make me feel inadequate!
I've knocked it down from a 5 to a 4 because I've come across errors so obvious I have no idea how they went unnoticed. Take the Spaghetti Bolognese entry for an example. It tells you you'll need a 100g/14oz can of tomatoes. 14oz is 396g! In the same recipe there's no mention of celery in the ingredient list but the recipe says 'Add the onion and celery'. My family does not eat meat, but we do eat fish, and quite a lot of it. The techniques are explained really well, and the recipes always work well. Together with the Leith's Vegetarian Bible, this book has now become my main source of recipes and ideas. I highly recommend both to fish lovers and semi-vegetarians (like me).

Got this book for Christmas 07 and am slowly but surely working my way through it.
Simple, easy to follow and well explained. My only slight fault would be I would like even just a little picture beside each recipe to see how it's supposed to turn out. Other than that, 10/10 >>More Details |

Whilst probably not the healthiest cook book in the world (almost as bad as Nigela for the cream!) the receipes are simple, quick and tasty and also with a bit of imagination very adaptable. The chilli has become a regular meal in my house, sometimes with rice as suggested and other times with sour cream, avocado and extra chili in wraps and even as a base for a veggie burger!
I'm a veggie but my husband isn't and it is sometimes difficult to find meals which appeal to him and that I can eat but most of the receipes in this book suit us both and don't get the normal "yeah but it's just vegetables ain't it" response from him! Delia knows her cooking, however, she hasn't researched vegetarianism properly. She is using parmesan. All vegetarians know that parmesan is not vegetarian, so she should mention to use the substitute cheese. It is misleading new vegetarians into thinking parmesan is ok. That's why only 2 stars.
If one reads the recipes carefully and alter it accordingly then there are some very nice new ideas in this book.. >>More Details |

This is a fantastic book that covers cooking and cooking skills. It is a fantastic reference, a great example of this is I wanted a hollandaise sauce recipe and the book mentions three differnet methods depending on the amount of people you are cooking for. Excellent is the only word for it and it allows you to cook in your own style with the tips/knowledge of a chef. I would like to read the book in bed from cover to cover, but I think my wife would leave me if I did.... It is a little bit sad I suppose.

This book is so comprehensive I actually felt sad reading it that probably most of the new things I will eat are here and I won't find this kind of thing again.
Covers recipes from many different areas, so don't assume this is similar to her previous Indian subcontinent based books. Recipes are more really veggie by great making use of local specialities and this makes for some great tasting dishes that can be enjoyed by all not just put up with by the veggies. >>More Details |

I love this book - every recipe I have made has worked. Having repeatedly borrowed it from the library I tried to buy a copy without success - until now, with this lovely new paperback edition. She seems to have come up with many ideas that I have not seen elsewhere - very refreshing. Also, many recipes are for two people which avoids having to scale everything down - although she must have a bigger appetite than I have! There are no pictures of the food; instead there are vibrant fruit and vegetable ink paintings. I wouldn't have minded fewer of these but it's a small quible and better than nothing at all. It is one of the few books that I actually cook from out of my embarassingly large collection of vegetarian cookery books.

Although it is not necessarily a *bad* book, I don't believe it is cheap, or simple. Suggested simple meals are "jacket potatoes" and "poaches eggs", and suddenly the jump is made to the likes of "leeks baked with blue cheese" and "pumpkin goulash", which make up the bulk of the book. There are no real intermediate meals. Neither are the meals cheap
The lack of in-between cooking would be fine if something more exotic was what you wanted, but it's not appropriate in a student cook book. The same applies for the likes of the cocktail and juices section. It also does not help that there is no pictures within the book, which would be handy to know what the meal your cooking should look like.
