I picked this up first in Waterstone's and the first few pages had me smiling and then almost crying. So I bought it on here!
Just couldn't put it down, read it cover to cover. Really liked the style of writing, humorous, vulnerable and revealing in that wonderful English way. Felt included in the journey and privvy to the most fascinating parts of the revamp of the zoo and the authors life.
I have given this book to 3 friends and I am so impressed with it no doubt it will be making an appearance under several Xmas trees this year!

This is a really beautiful book - very plainly and movingly written - about Johnny's rescued deer called Bambi. She featured a lot in his first TV series and this little book is his tribute to her. Like all the very best books about animals it is absolutely unsentimental but it moved me to tears at the end. Recommended to anyone who likes true animals stories - of any age. Although this book is aimed at adults I think eleven year olds+ would love it.

Although the Haggis Cafe in HIghland Fling will always have a place in my heart, the masterly way Katie has entwined the stories of the three women at the heart of this story has to make it my new best favourite. There are a host of memorable minor characters too, not least the very dishy Hugo...Loved it!

I found this book by chance after seeing an advert in a magazine. As a retired rural police officer and with family living in North yorkshire I thought it was worth a look.I was not to be disappointed. It actually features the village where my son lives and I was able to 'identify'some of the characters that the author had cunningly disguised.I really enjoyed this book from start to finish and was sorry when it ended.Knowing the locality helped but also knowing the job as well made this such a worth while read.I easily identified with all the situations that Mike found himself in and his descriptions were brilliant. This is definitely the best police memoirs book I have read.

I have been a fan of Fern's for years. I admit I was disappointed when it all came out about her gastric band and I bought the book fearing that it would be a whitewash. It isn't. Fern has not had it easy. The proof that she really is the nice person I always thought she was is that she doesn't point fingers or spill blood and guts in the way that has become commonplace in celebrity biographies which, in my view, is all to her credit. Yet reading between the lines, her father being totally absent, her stepfather being less than easy... I have a much clearer understanding of how she manages to emphathise with people who go on This Morning. Her descriptions of depression so closely mirrored my own that it was a great comfort to me. This is classic stuff worth getting alone for the 'Getting Sam Home' feature length film from Xmas 1983. This was the first feature length film of a sitcom to be made for TV. Shows such as Only Fools and Horses later followed this trend with their own Xmas feature length specials.
If you like classic BBC comedy like Steptoe and Son, Dad's Army etc then this is a must buy ...

This is a very welcome return to the Yorkshire Dales and the people - both young and old - who inhabit them. This book is imbued with the love, laughter, hardship, tears and honesty that his previous books have been filled with.
"Mester Phinn" is a very good story-teller and has an easy style about his writing. The love he has for the people and places he writes about is thee for all to see. The characters and characterisations are as colourful and fulsome as in his previous outings.
This book is a wonderful way to spend a pleasant few hours after a hard day at work, or just a good book to become lost in at any time of the day.
The ending has the feeling of the last in the series, although there are one or two 'loose ... Read More:
