This book is magic. I read it a few years ago and still sneak a peak at it before I head off on holiday to get me revved up for diving. A wonderful book. Not only does this book describe diving from a personal perspective and explain how and why the author has become so bewitched by it but it also has some wonderful historical information and diving anecdotes that really do provide the book with the ability to convey that 'X Factor' that provides diving with some much of it's magic and draw. Highly recommended.

I was a basic scuba diver in my youth to middle age, I dived on many wrecks in Scottish waters, though nothing as advanced or dangerous as the dives described in this book. Having once been fixated with recovering artefacts from the sea that you would not give a second glance to if you passed them on the street, I can understand the china "fever" that infected some of the divers. If you want to find out who was the philosopher, read the book :) That bit made me laugh. McMurray's account is gripping and very readable, all the more so since he actually dived the wreck. Apart from the technical difficulties and dangers of diving such a deep wreck, super advanced wreck diving, McMurray gives a fair and balanced account of the personalities involved; obsessive ... This is a wonderful book. Cousteau knows how to tell fascinating dive stories (some involving near-death moments) and keep you informed as well. The photos in the hardback edition are mostly (but not all) black and white, but stunning, especially the photo of a shark's maw one foot away from Cousteau's camera! The courage of the man takes the breath away and makes a lot of today's expert divers seem namby-pamby. No wetsuits for Jacques, he and Didi Dumas swam around in very brief swimtrunks which were no doubt regarded as sexy and trendy in the 1950s. Both of them do lots of things in the sea which would now be regarded as politically incorrect, so a really fun read.

Dark Descent: Diving and the Deadly Allure of the Empress of Ireland: Diving and the Deadly Allure of The Empress of Ireland

by: Kevin F. Mcmurray
April 01, 2005

I was drawn to purchase this book as I really enjoyed reading McMurrays' account of the various efforts made to explore the Andrea Doria over the years. (Deep Descent - Adventure and death diving the Andrea Doris, available through Amazon) This book about the Empress of Ireland was more like the curate's egg, being good in parts, and much space is inevitably given to the disputes over access to the wreck, issues over the legality of retrieving artefacts from the wreck and attempts to set up a museum about the wreck (eventually successful) with an underlying Quebecois versus Anglophone versus the Yanks conflict present! However, I cannot see how the author could have got round this overload of information as the various long drawn out disputes profoundly affected ... Read More:

"Diver Down" certainly provides stories that have the potential to scare the wits out of non-diving friends in their retelling. However, these accounts would not look out of place in "The Darwin Awards". After all, would you drop anchor and then go for a dive in unfamiliar waters without surface cover (i.e. with no crew left aboard) - and with a squall brewing? What is sad is that poor judgement by one person can kill or seriously injure buddies or rescuers. I guess the moral here is to look after 'number one' - in order to avert a daft accident or be in a position to offer assistance to those in difficulty.

"Diver Down" tends to describe `sensational' accidents that carry few lessons for the average diver. Most of the accidents described are in overhead ... Read More:

: Essentials of Deeper Sport Diving

Essentials of Deeper Sport Diving

by: John Lippmann
1992-12

I wonder how many serious and dedicated scuba divers actually continue to put off their natural progression from recreational scuba diving to the more advanced techniques of technical diving? Personally, I delayed that progression for far too long. As a professional underwater photo-journalist who specialises in shipwreck research, however, I find myself being drawn more and more towards deeper and deeper wrecks - if only because these are the wrecks that divers want to know more about.

My first choice in books when commencing that transition to more technical expertise, was this book by John Lippman. A number of people have commented that it is out-of-date - but it is only out-of-date if your own expertise has already progressed beyond the level which this ... Read More:

This is an excellent book. It is consistently thrilling, informative and well written.

Reading through the book, you'll soon think the people involved mad, and as the book progresses, you'll be wanting to join them...

An excellent read, and Martyn Farr comes across as a genuinely likeable and down to earth person.

To anyone involved in diving this is a must read. So often we hear about sports diving but very rarely do we get an insight of those who do this for a living, whether forces or commercial.

Tony's insight into the world many of us no little about is a fantastic account of the work, the dangers and the colourful characters within the industry. Yes, it takes a special person and an insight of those unique people are well documented. Some you will like but in most cases you will love. My sides ached with laughter of some of the characters in Tonys book. I should know I think I was one of these at one time.

And if your not into diving, read it anyway. Its differant, its real and gets you thinking about the world of working underwater. All in a time ... Read More:

Kevin Gurr is obviously one of the best known technical divers and highly experienced in his field. With this book he is offering a substantial collection of interesting information about technical diving, but also a well-written wrap-up of aspects to make regular diving safer. I would argue it is not just for the technical diver, but for anyone who has started diving and wants to learn why the more experienced divers chose different setups, how they select and arrange their kit. Even for absolute basics like a reel and smb, there is a lot in here where the average PADI AOWD student can pick up a lot of information. Personally I found this book as well as the (GUE) book "Fundamentals of Better Diving" by Jarrod Jablonski the two best books on the subject so far. Arguments for ... Read More:
