This is the best vegan book I've read so far. There is tons of information in this book that I couldn't find anywhere else, and it's nice to read about some sound science that backs a vegan lifestyle. If you are thinking of becoming a vegan or already are a vegan, this is a solid guide to help you better understand what foods to eat.

This book has so much information about converting to a plant based diet. It had all the info about the nutrition of vegetarians including what vegetarian diets tend to lack. It dispels all the nutritional rumors and has a handy guide on how to switch and how to deal with those who may chastize you. It even has recepies and cooking tips for the new vegetarian chef.
Whether you do it for your health, for your love of animals, or because you want something new, Becoming Vegetarian is definitly what I would recommend for those new to the switch.

This is a nice book if you are interested in transitioning to a higher % of raw foods in your diet. The tone is non-dogmatic and encouraging, with the co-authors offering various viewpoints and approaches to consider. The recipe section is large and varied. I recommend this book for those who are interested in including more non-cooked, high-enzyme foods in their diet.

Most of the book reasonably covers the disease and associated problems. The problem is that the authors advocate the mostly carbohydrate diet which may not work well if you have Type II diabetes with obesity and insulin resistance. If you have Type II diabetes and you are obese, you most likely have "thrifty genes" so large amounts of carbohydrates do not make any sense to me to either control blood glucose or loose weight. If you have the apple shape you may want to consider other dietary options. I suggest that you use your meter or at least your HB1AC readings to determine what is right for you. If carbs make you numbers go high, then carbs may not be for you.

This is an excellent book. I decided to become vegetarian a few years ago both for health and ethical reasons and this one one of the first books I bought - its remained the one I turn to over and over again - especially when friends or relatives questions how healthy a vegetarian diet is and I need to educate them. Some of the most fascinating parts of this book talk about the history of the current meat-based diet and how the government pushed it and helped market meats of all sorts to get people to buy more (to help farmers out). Also though there is great info on how much protien a person actually needs and where you can get it from - its actually pretty easy to get all the protien you need over the course of a day. Since becoming vegetarian (really ... Read More:

Bought the book for a friend who is lactose intolerant. After a lot of research, it really stood out as the best book. Unlike many books, it's entirely dairy free, which is key to those who are fully lactose intolerant. And I wasn't specifically interested in a book that was vegan (or soy free).
He likes the book quite well, and I think/hope it'll prove useful to him. It's hard to buy something like this who has been intolerant for a while, and already knows many of the specifics the book covers, but I think/hope it'll prove useful.

This book delivers on most of what it promises. It is a great book filled with sound nutritional advice for someone who wants to become a vegetarian. The book is well researched and very informative, but I'd only suggest it for someone with a very solid grasp on nutrition and vegetarianism already.
While a solid resource, it is farily jargonistic and a bit high end in its approach for a "casual vegetarian." The information is very detailed and at times feels a bit above a casual reader's frame of reference. I bought several books on healthy eating as a vegetarian the same time I bought this one; while the others didn't contain as much raw information, they were all MUCH easier to read. This book isn't very user friendly.
