This book really hit home. In Fall 2008 the wisdom of small homes is really becoming clear with our present mass economic crunch in the US. Take this book to heart and start living it.

This is a very interesting book. It features in one part a detailed description of 2006 Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus and his Grameen Bank, who used microloans to help Bangladeshis, especially women, get out of poverty and earn for themselves. By issuing very small loans, the people of Bangladesh are able to build their businesses or working conditions and change their lives. I recommend this book.

This book has already made a difference in my life. I purchased it because of a loss of faith in politics as usual. Lappe's idea of living democracy, as opposed to "thin democracy" (where you vote for a politician and hand off all responsibility for another four years) really hit home. I have joined an amateur radio emergency service group and attended my first neighborhood community meeting as I try to participate in rather than whine about our living democracy.

Although most of the material in this book will be familiar to anyone who has made some study of development issues, economic theory, and Third World politics, it is nonetheless an excellent primer for those who do not. The accessible and simple writing style, the useful examples, the systematic approach to all the relevant issues in food policy, and the historical awareness in the book all combine to make it the best introduction to the world problematic of agriculture that one ... With lots of milk, eggs, and cheese, many of the recipes are "stick to the ribs" vegetarian. I consider it the "old-fashioned" vegetarian style and sometimes, that's just what I want. A great companion to Diet for a Small Planet.

There are some excellent reviews of this book, so I will summarize the key points briefly and then point to the top ten books on my Transpartisan Democracy list.
This is a delightful, thoughtful read that is totally transpartisan in spirit, and joins other books like Escaping the Matrix and Society's Breakthrough in setting the stage for a non-violent restoration of We the People as the working owners of the Republic.
The author distinguishes between thin and living democracy, points out that democracy is a process, and you must live it or lose it. The two appendices are superb, one on competing frames (one page) and one on restoring the meaning of language for democracy (3 pages). I recommend taking a look at them before reading the book itself. ... Read More:

I am so proud of this book. I was excited to read it when it was first published and just recently ordered additional copies. My wonderful, creative son just happens to be Jeffrey Perkins, one of the authors. I speak to groups as a PFLAG NH Mom and I use many quotes from this book concerning Jeff's accounts of growing up in Plymouth, NH on a farm and the discrimination he felt in school which he never shared with us at that time.
We are so proud of Jeff and look forward to his next book.
