The True Story of the Three Little Pigsby: Jon Scieszka March 01, 1996 |

This book is the classic story of the "three little pigs" from the wolf's perspective. It is a bit funny, sometimes very funny, but more important, it shows children, that even if you think you KNOW what happened, there is always two sides to every story. It is an entertaining way to teach children not to engage or believe gossip, but to seek out the truth. Additionally, it shows how both sides involved in a conflict, can view the exact same situation in two totally different ways. This is an enagaging and enjoyable story, and fun for all ages!

The "Knucklehead" was very naughty with some crazy tricks. The front of the book makes it look like a comic book but it's really not. It's a chapter book with short chapters and some photos. Jon is a naughty kid who is forever going outdoors or playing tricks on his four younger brothers. This is the story of the author and the funny things that happened when he was a kid. Once in Sunday School Jon had to write down all of the curse words he knew and show them to the teacher for an assignment. Jon said that the universe stopped when the teacher read the list. I loved this book because it had such an out of the box writing style. The tales play up the silliness that is obvious when reading the original versions. My family got a good giggle from this one! The stinky cheese man is so funny. Especially for those who love cheese even though it does stink!LOL

My son loves this book so very much. It is always in the three-book-a-night line up. Though the characters are smashing, they are doing what they love and (mostly) helping out others in the process.

Jon Scieszka never disappoints when he puts out a book. We are huge fans of all of his picture books for younger children, but I believe that he has outdone himself with Math Curse. It is by far, one of my son's favorite books that we read over and over again. This is typical Scieszka humor laced with lots of cool math riddles that makes kids think and learn while laughing themselves silly all the way through the book. It's companion, Science Verse is also a great book and we are hoping that there are some other subjects at school that he can spin into another book like this one. The illustrations by Lane Smith are great as well and add an additional element of fun to the book. A must for any home library collection!

I'm a huge Mary Blair fan so naturally I wanted to get this book of her work on Alice in Wonderland. The book arrived in a timely fashion and was in perfect condition. It's also a fantastic picture book for kids. Thank you!

"Melvin Might?" is part of the Trucktown series of children's books, but the storyline is much more traditional - essentially, it's a retelling of "The Little Engine That Could". One of the nice touches in the wording is the use of rhyming words. This makes the story of particular interest/use to pre-readers.
The artwork is fine, although again, not groundbreaking. There have been too many cute cars-with-headlight-eyes renderings to count at this point. My five-year-old loves cars and trucks but wasn't particularly moved by this one. We read it a handful of times and he hasn't asked for it again since. Of course, kids' tastes are all different and you may have better luck. >>More Details |

When my son was in elementary school, he did not like reading, but this book (and the other two in the series) totally captured his attention. They're funny, imaginative, and just the right level of difficulty for a child who's not a great reader. He's in his 20's now, but the mention of these books still brings a smile to his face.

I teach eighth grade Language Arts, and I'm always on the prowl for books that will engage young boys to read. I picked this up on a whim, and I'm very pleased. This anthology has a little bit of everything in it: fiction, non-fiction, illustrations, cartoon strips -- the works. The shorts cover a wide-range of topics from the silly to the dead-serious. In short, there's something in this book for every taste. I think it will be a popular book for my classroom library.
There's only one little thing that I'm hesitant about: there's one illustration in the book that shows recognizable male genitalia on a monster drawn when the artist was in fifth grade (I think). This is totally up my fairy tale alley! I love the idea of the continuation of the fairy tale and I love just how real and likeable the poor Frog Prince came. This book has many fairy tale references mixed with pop culture that are just hilarious, and yet there is plenty of heart and a very sweet message.
