I learned so much from Animal Liberation. It was an eye opener in many aspects. I had read about animal farming, but didn't know much about lab testing. Peter Singer exposes humans using animals for our benefits. Animals are a convenience for our health - through animal testing - or for our food consumption. He says that animal experimentation will only be ended when a series of piecemeal reforms have reduced its importance, and that our immediate task is to work for these partial goals, which can be milestones to the elimination of all exploitation of animals. By this, Singer emphasizes that in order to reach those goals, we first need to eliminate speciesism. But he later also says that "cruelty is acknowledged only where profitability ceases". ... I bought this book a few weeks ago and really enjoyed reading it. I think it was thought-provoking. I really liked the way the authors looked at what the families purchased and then discussed the items and their origins. I think that helps the average person to relate to the information. I highly recommend the book to all people that care and are curious about where their food comes from and if there are ethical implications that they should consider before making the purchase (e.g., environmental considerations, animal concerns, etc.). Two thumbs up for this book!

Because I like short books, I have tried several of the "Very Short Introduction..." series. I have been unable to finish any of them.

But Peter Singer is a world famous thinker. He is probably best known for writing Animal Liberation, a book that jump started the animal rights movement (which I haven't read). I have read Singer's critique of George W Bush (The President of Good and Evil) and liked it well enough. So I felt Singer's study of Marx was worth giving the series another shot.

A discussion of as controversial a figure as Karl Marx should come with some forewarning to the reader about the pre-conceptions of the author. I came to Singer's book with a low opinion of the relevance of Marx's philosophy to our time, but ... Read More:

I flat out love this cook book. Through out the fall and winter I ripped through the recipes. The "my favorite tomato soup" beyond delicious...they all are.

I'd been vegan for years, so when I began buying some eggs, fish and cheese at the local farmer's markets I really had no real idea how the heck to cook them. This book truly came to the rescue. I can now whip out a decent frittata and make a perfect hard cooked egg.

And because I shop local the layout of recipes by season is perfect. I shop, come home and flip to that section and am on my way to preparing something super tasty.

If I were forced to own just one cook book this would the the one.

I am amazed at the number of people who criticize Peter Singer's work, Practical Ethics, by somehow pointing to his contradictions. I need to remind some of you that if there is one thing professional philosophers know something or two about is contradictions, and if any of you have spent a little time in a philosophy class, you might understand the importance of Singer's work.

When I read some of these self-assured reviewers, who, for the most part, lack any training in logic and rigorous philosophical analysis but love to throw the term "contradiction" around, as a form of self-adulation, I chuckle. Regrettably, what I do find are people who build straw-man arguments, abandon the principle of charity, and engage in ad hominem attacks. Singer ... Read More:

Books : One World: The Ethics of Globalization

One World: The Ethics of Globalization

by: Peter Singer
October 01, 2002

This book has more of a political focus than an ethics focus. A serious shortcoming is the lack of appreciation for the Eastern perspective. There is no mention in the index of Buddha, Confucius, or Taoism. How can you consider globalization from a parochial perspective? I recommend this book by Canright: Achieve Lasting Happiness: Timeless Secrets to Transform Your Life. "Achieve Lasting Happiness" proposes Confucian philosophy as a basis for universal ethics. Globalization will crush humanity unless there is a system of universal ethics as a counter balance to greed on a world-wide scope.

I purchased the wrong edition of this book by mistake. Once I discovered the error, I tried to return this book for the correct edition but the seller never responded to my request. This is the second time in two months that I have had problems with sellers that Amazon contracts out to. Luckily, the other seller did back-up his product and I received a full refund. I am still awaiting a reply from the seller of the Biology book.

The VSI series can be a bit mixed, but Singer's entry in the series on Hegel is outstanding. It offers a superlative introduction to the complexity of Hegel's thoughts and does so in clear and engaging prose. My primary complaint, although I sympathize with the reasons that Singer offers, is the scant treatment of the Science of Logic. It is immensely important to understanding Hegel, and other works, like The Philosophy of Right, which Singer devotes a chapter too, rest on the views put forward in the Science of Logic. My other complaint is Singer's repeated emphasis on Marx and Marxism in relation to Hegel. There are far more important ways, philosophically speaking, in which Hegel has influenced thinking. I would rather have seen discussion of the interplay of analytic ... Read More:

Books : Writings on an Ethical Life

Writings on an Ethical Life

by: Peter Singer
November 21, 2000

Singer writes about many subjects which are potentially disturbing to a complacent, wealthy American (such as myself). I found the essays to be a salutary reminder of my effect on the larger world, and refreshingly down-to-earth. These are not academic essays, but journalistic ones which address ethical matters of concern to every political person with a conscience.
