This book has so much information about converting to a plant based diet. It had all the info about the nutrition of vegetarians including what vegetarian diets tend to lack. It dispels all the nutritional rumors and has a handy guide on how to switch and how to deal with those who may chastize you. It even has recepies and cooking tips for the new vegetarian chef.
Whether you do it for your health, for your love of animals, or because you want something new, Becoming Vegetarian is definitly what I would recommend for those new to the switch.

This is an excellent book. I decided to become vegetarian a few years ago both for health and ethical reasons and this one one of the first books I bought - its remained the one I turn to over and over again - especially when friends or relatives questions how healthy a vegetarian diet is and I need to educate them. Some of the most fascinating parts of this book talk about the history of the current meat-based diet and how the government pushed it and helped market meats of all sorts to get people to buy more (to help farmers out). Also though there is great info on how much protien a person actually needs and where you can get it from - its actually pretty easy to get all the protien you need over the course of a day. Since becoming vegetarian ... Read More:

This book delivers on most of what it promises. It is a great book filled with sound nutritional advice for someone who wants to become a vegetarian. The book is well researched and very informative, but I'd only suggest it for someone with a very solid grasp on nutrition and vegetarianism already.
While a solid resource, it is farily jargonistic and a bit high end in its approach for a "casual vegetarian." The information is very detailed and at times feels a bit above a casual reader's frame of reference. I bought several books on healthy eating as a vegetarian the same time I bought this one; while the others didn't contain as much raw information, they were all MUCH easier to read. This book isn't very user friendly.

This is a very disappointing book. In the earliest Buddhist scriptures, when the Buddha was asked to make his monks be vegetarian, he said no, it was not necessary. The author insists that this was an invention of later monks who were fond of meat. However, there is absolutely NO evidence for this whatsoever. Kapleau, a self-proclaimed Zen Buddhist roshi, can't understand the stance of early Buddhism, and instead of questioning his own views on the subject, he insists that the Buddha's teaching as we have it is wrong.
The author uses specious logic to support his prejudices and predilections and ignores a mountain of evidence to the contrary. In a short digression near the beginning of the book, he feels it necessary to show that one must be a vegetarian ... Read More:

A commonly held stereotype of a vegetarian is that of a tree-hugging hippie wearing a tie dyed shirt and Birkenstocks while eating granola. As is true with most sweeping generalizations, this picture far is from the truth for most vegetarians. Our community is as diverse as any other and represents many faiths, nationalities, political beliefs, and philosophies. This diversity is clearly reflected in Voices From the Garden.
Voices is a collection of essays from famous, not-so-famous, and never-heard-of vegetarians describing their transitions to plant-based diets. Every kind of vegetarian is represented in this book. Some of the contributors have been at it for sixty years; some are still in the infancy of their explorations. They represent the ecological, ... Read More:
