I have owned a copy of Joy Johnson's "The Sensuous Gourmet" for about a year now, and have nothing but superlative recommendations for it. It is simply written, sufficiently so that a fledgling vetetarian cook can follow it. The recipes do not require a trip to Tibet to find the ingredients. I am a novice vegetarian, and perhaps would have "converted" long ago if I had access to the types of recipes which Joy Johnson provides in this book. Everything I have tried so far has been successful, and delicious. The format of the book makes it easy to follow and update.

I certainly haven't tried every recipe in this book, but I have tried enough to know that it is spot on for what it is offering, which is a variety of grubbing, basic vegetarian recipes that provide some quantity. You won't feed hundreds with these recipes, but you will feed 10.
I don't use cookbooks very often. When I do, I am looking for inspiration for something new to try or I am looking for a basis on which to apply my own creative process upon. Even when I do use a cookbook, I rarely pre...more I certainly haven't tried every recipe in this book, but I have tried enough to know that it is spot on for what it is offering, which is a variety of grubbing, basic vegetarian recipes that provide some quantity. This cookbook is a visual delight from start to finish. The warm and calm colors are paired with energetic "shadow" pictures, and a very clean layout that seems to make me want to cook! The subtitle states, "Recipes for Singles," but this is also an excellent cookbook for couples. Most of the recipes yield 2 servings, while some cater 1, 3, or 4 people. But overall, these aren't your average jumbo recipes that must be halved, and halved again to suit petite households.
To be honest, there are very few recipes I don't plan on trying in this cookbook. Thus far, I have been thrilled with the Sunrise Smoothie, Berry Power Shake, Golden Gravy, Seasoned Tofu Tidbits, and the Frozen Yogurt Berry Pops, and I can't wait to try the Hacienda ... Read More:

Whether from one's own garden or from a farmer's market featuring locally grown fruits and vegetables, season produce is an ecologically responsible way to buy food -- and the most effective and economical way to create palate pleasing, appetite satisfying, nutritious dishes for every meal of the day. Drawing upon her more than twenty years in the food business, Devra Gartenstein has compiled an impressive collection of recipes in "Local Bounty: Season Vegan Recipes" using the kinds of seasonal ingredients a good farmer's market will offer to a discriminating customer. Other benefits include the fact that ripe produce is at its best flavor and highest nutritional value, transportation from farm to consumer requires the least amount of fossil fuel, small ... I love the style of cooking in this book: relatively simple recipes, most often with everyday ingredients; well written instructions; and a focus on whole foods (including the use of whole grain flours and unrefined sweeteners whenever possible). It is packed with recipes, 240 to be exact, so there options for new vegans (how to use tofu and seitan, for example), and vegan veterans who want wheat and soy-free recipes that creatively incorporate fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. That said those who are coming from fast food territory will still be welcomed by the author with some shortcut recipes for things like Tofu Dog Bites.
I have reviewed The Complete Idiot's Guide to Juicing (thumbs up) and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Total ... Read More:

I love this cook book, it's beautifully made, the pictures are excellent. The recipes aren't so bad either. I love the recipes for the vegetable and fruit juices, I don't have a juicer, but I had been weighing the pro's and con's of getting one and this book tipped me in the right direction.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking into or transitioning to raw food and anyone who is a busy person. It is simple, easy and the recipes really are ready fairly quickly. The food itself is very tasty and as long as you plan ahead you can be eating within 10 minutes of walking in the door. The "high fat" content alluded to in another review is much lower than a typical mainstream meal and it is my belief that when you transition to raw foods you need to have as much of the heavier foods around as possible, so that you feel satisfied as your body is getting used to the change. Worry about the fat later, when you are an experienced raw foodist. Chances are your body will tell you by then anyway! Enjoy this delightful little book and enjoy all the time ... Read More:
