There are two chefs who taught me how to cook by virtue of publishing the books that I learned from. The first is Madhur Jaffrey (World of the East Vegetarian Cooking--an outstanding, comprehensive book of recipes, methods, ingredients and their substitutions for beginners with a knack for flavors and the will to give it a try). The next is Eric Tucker, Head Chef of Millennium Restaurant in San Francisco (best restaurant I've ever had the pleasure of dining in) and author of two Millennium books including The Artful Vegan.

The recipes are great, but in no way are they fast. Many of the items are not kept in a typical pantry. No meat analogs here, which is refreshing!

Although I am not Vegan I do enjoy this book for ideas on salad, grains and pasta compositions. I substitute or add ingredients at will but follow the recipes for basic preparation. Healthy, simple and good!

I find this book to be such a refreshing break from the typical diet drivel put out by "big-name" physicians like Atkins. Dr. Klaper knows his nutrition, knows his medicine, and even knows his foods (the recipes are excellent.) With his kind heart, he shares the best way to save yours.

This cookbook uses measurements in weight (so grams instead of cups), which probably makes for more consistent baking but was hard for me to adjust to. I had to buy a scale to follow the recipes. Also, since this cookbook is from outside the US, I didn't understand what some of the basic ingredients were or how to get them. I had to google to figure out where I could get them. Some very nice recipes but I've only made one or two from this book because I am not confident about following the recipes.

This is my favorite vegan cookbook so far! (I have several). It uses really simple ingredients, and the portion sizes are hearty. I will probably need to replace it in a few years because my current copy is getting rather beat up due to overuse.
Another reviewer wrote about the 'wrong amount of pepper' in a potato-kale recipe. I tried that recipe too, and since I really like pepper, it tasted great! But to each their own... The Vegetarian Resource Group is also a great resource for vegetarian/vegan cookbooks and restaurant listings. I'm pleased that this cookbook came from them. >>More Details |

When I received my copy of My Sweet Vegan, it was so much fun to hand it to my dairy-allergic daughter and say, "All of these recipes are dairy free. Which one do you want to make first?" She looked at the beautiful, full-color photos of rich and creamy and chocolate-y and caramel-y desserts and said, "ALL of them? I can eat them all?"
Yes, she can, and so can the egg allergic and vegans. They can all enjoy Whoopie Pies and Bananas Foster Cake and Pumpkin Pecan Pie. A few of the ingredients are a challenge for us to find in our small town right now, such as brown rice syrup and dairy-free soy yogurt. But we are working on it, and since we are not vegans or allergic to eggs, we can use ingredients like honey and eggs (and dairy-free sour cream) if we're stuck. >>More Details |

This book has many recipes that can be made quickly and are very tasty. The entree and dessert sections are great!It is an informative, fun and lively book for the beginning Vegan, without being preachy and ridged. Some of the recipes may be tricky for an inexperienced cook. I had a difficult time making the vegan soy whip cream, but with a little bit of practice it turns out perfect every time. I love that the recipes come from friends and family, this makes them less intimidating. Unlike other vegan cook books that have difficult to find ingredients and take hours to prepare, which is fine if you want to make a gourmet feast.
