I was disappointed with this cookbook because instead of coming up with creative ideas to reinvent these dishes as vegan, the author simply calls for "vegan cheese" in nearly every recipe. Not only is vegan cheese gross and very rarely truly vegan, but it raises the question: why buy this cookbook? I can substitute vegan cheese in all the vegetarian Mexican dishes I know and essentially have the same repertoire.
Other than that major flaw, some of the recipes are good and seem fairly authentic. I think the other reviewers mentioned it is a very boring layout with no pictures. But the bottom line is that it contains very little you couldn't come up with on your own. I would say don't waste your time with this one.

I'm not a vegan, but my son is a vegetarian who is gluten-free and intolerant to lactose and eggs. As this is a fairly new thing, I've been at my wit's end to try to figure out how to feed him healthful food that he's actually interested in eating. This book has been a gold mine!
The recipes aren't easy, per se, but they're not terribly difficult either. They do take some time, but they turn out as promised and the recipes are well written. And best of all, he likes them - and so does the rest of my family, all ardent meat-eathers.
IMO, that's the real test - everyone from a fairly picky child to adults who usually turn up their noses at anything that didn't once "moo" loves the recipes in this book. The ingredients are ... Read More:

As I flipped through this cookbook, my mouth started watering. I wanted to make EVERY one of the recipes, which I think is unusual. Gartenstein includes a variety of ethnic cuisines that appealed to me.
It is not perfect, though. Other reviewers here have noticed the same problems I did, but I have a few to add as well.
1. The directions are deliberately vague. This didn't bother me as I have a pretty good idea what I'm doing already. But not helpful for someone new to cooking or veganism.
2. Some of the directions she does include I didn't like. She does what most cookbooks do as far as throwing the garlic and the onions in at the same time, which to my mind either undercooks the onions or burns the garlic. ... Read More:

I think the problem I had with this book is that I read it immediately after having read Joel Fuhrman's Eat to live. Dr Fuhrman presented the same information (and more) in a much more engaging manner. Not to mention that Fuhrman is a practicing physician who actually "prescribes" a vegan diet to hundreds of patients/year and monitors the results. I was inspired by Fuhrman's book. This one? Not so much.

It's important for vegans to keep their culinary options wide open. This cookbook provides an excellent selection of recipes for vegan chefs of any level. Yum!

I am very, very picky and I absolutely love this book. Having read much of Sarah Kramer's blog, I don't think she is in love with herself or arrogant in any way. She seems like a very kind, sincere, warm person who just wants to share her life. I did not like Vegan with A Vengeance or Dreena Burton's books. They have very complicated recipes that taste terrible, with the exception of the desserts.
La Dolce Vegan is the kind of food I like: simple, easy, but very tasty. It is worth the price of the book for the Vegan Cheeseburger Pizza recipe alone. If you like the tastes on a burger, you will love this one. I've made it several times, once for a friend who was visiting from out of town, who flipped for it. The mushroom soup is also really, really ... Read More:

As a long-time vegetarian who just decided to go vegan I wanted a book that could help with with my transition. Some decent & basic advice is given on how to travel as a vegan, addressing folks in your life who have questions and smart ways to deal with the negative feedback you often get from people around you, along with other logistical things you may want to consider.
Although the authors do communicate that they really want to respect other people's choices they get a bit 'preachy' in many areas of the book. I prefer to lay low and not become one of those annoying vegans/vegetarians who share a 'holier then thou attitude'. The authors do feed into that stereotypical annoying group of people a little bit. If you're someone in the same boat ... Read More:

I bought this book because I am trying to cut down on saturated fat and get more produce in my diet, I also bake vegan, no sugar desserts as a hobby. So far, the two best recipes have been the 10 minute brownies and the seitan salad. For the brownies, I substituted spelt flour and used maple syrup instead of sugar. They were divine: moist, chewy and fudgy, the first vegan brownies I've made that were actually good. I made the seitan salad sandwiches to take to work for lunch. They seem to develop the best flavor if you let the seitan salad sit overnight to meld the flavors. It is very tasty and similar to a chicken salad sandwich. The texture of the seitan works perfectly!
Unfortunately, other recipes were not as successful. The pumpkin scones are extremely ... Read More:
