What a wonderful change of pace! The emphasis here is on eastern/northern European cuisine with some north North American, although any place that gets cold (e.g. central Asia) certainly is represented.

Goldstein goes well beyond root vegetables and mushrooms--there are a hearty number of millet and buckwheat recipes as well as other delights. The ingredients required are not particularly exotic, yet the recipe selection is fresher and more accessible than the norm. The author is somewhat eclectic in her writing, organization, and selection, but one senses she's actually strongly recommending the recipes that do make it in. This is a vegetarian cookbook that actually makes a serious contribution to the genre.

wonderful recipes with touches of many countries cuisines. I loved the photos accompanying the recipes, really inspirational. you really get a lot for your money with this book. as always I checked it out of the library and then wanted it to stay in my home so I bought it.
I found the recipes not difficult but not so simplistic that the food was one dimensional. Easy to whip up dinner in a small amount of time with ingredients on hand.

There are lots of good things to say about this book, but my favorite piece is that Shulman goes the extra mile and tells how to prepare all or part of the dishes in advance as well as how well and long they will keep once made. She also indicates which are hearty enough to be served as main dishes, especially useful since a lot of them are unfamiliar. I am not an intuitive cook and therefore cannot make a thing without a recipe to follow, so her thoughtful tips and hints throughout are much appreciated. Shulman also shares the origin of each recipe and sometimes how she happened to include it in the book. Well written overall and a wonderful introduction to the Mediterranean cuisines.
