I belong to a CSA, so I get a weekly box of vegetables for 20 weeks of the year. Whenever I want to try something new or add zing to a vegetable, one of the first places I turn is Madhur Jaffrey's World Vegetarian. I've found dozens of keepers in this cookbook - dishes I've never really encountered elsewhere, but that intrigue my tastebuds and stretch my horizons. For example, she has a "pumpkin pie" recipe from Greece (p 293) - think spanakopita (spinach pie), not Thanksgiving custard concoctions - and it never ceases to amaze people I make it for. I use 2 to 4 recipes per week from this cookbook during the height of CSA season. I love it so much, I joke that I should start a fan club. :^)
I am not a vegetarian but I love the recipes in this book. The muffuletta sandwich is awesome. I found the recipes very easy and tasty. They are also wonderful for entertaining.

I like this recipe book for its family-friendly approach. It has great basic recipes, and my family has enjoyed most of the recipes we've tried. The only drawback I've found is that the food, as prepared per the recipe, tends to be bland. I usually research my other recipe books on what spices to add and have been pleased with the results. The book does suggest "embellishments", but usually not amounts to add.

I recently purchased this book and I have to say that I was shocked by the sheer volume of recipes. If you're into quantity you definitely get that from this book. So far I've only tried 1 recipe from this book, and I can't really say that I tried the recipe. I used the information in this book to roast beets, after that I sort of took my cues from my intuition about what would taste good. Which is something I think all cooks should do. The book is filled with tons of ideas and recipes, some actually look like they taste good, So would I recommend this book, said the person who has yet to use one full recipe from the book--Yes I would. I haven't come across anything in this book that made me stop and say I'm going to make that, but that's not the type of cook ... Read More:

I focused anew on healthy foods a few months ago, and several recipes from this cookbook are in my "regular rotation". They are very tasty, easy to fix, and call for easy-to-find ingredients. I like the page lay-out of the book, too. I have lost over 25 pounds in 4 mos without ever going hungry or "dieting". When my doctor's nurse called to tell me about the improvement in my blood lipid panel, she added, "We rarely see so much improvement." My favorite recipes (paraphrased titles which I am copying from the back of my meal-planner) are:
sweet-and-sour tofu with broc & pprs, p. 261
curried tofu w fruit & quinoa, p. 345
hoisin & black-bean stir-fry w carrots, pprs, squash, snow-peas, p. 137
caul & raisin curry w chickpeas, p. 260

Excellent Book, goes great with my Fissler pressure Cooker. Fantastic book,it has not only recipes, but several "Time" charts to assist you with your pressure cooking experience, for everything from Beans, to rices,to vegetables, oh yes and GRAINS. As well as staple items to keep in the kitchen most used for pressure cooker meals, and other pieces of treasured knowledge. Super helpful, I have only had it a day and have already read and marked all the pages I'm going to try and already labled my time chart pages. Great book. I'm so glad I bought it!!! If you're vegetarian, and enjoy pressure cooking beans, veges and grains, you'll really appreciate this cookbook.

I'm glad I purchased this book as the recipes are healthy but a competent cook will be wise to jazz them up. I've made a few things so far but can't say I'm thrilled with any of the outcomes. I was really annoyed when the caption said something about it being worth the extra work and it came out so bland even with my attempts to add flavor! I'm a little gunshy now to try more recipes from the book as the ingredients are expensive and I don't want to choke down another family serving over a weeks time as my husband so far has not been impressed! Bottom line: healthy but bland.
