Great book. Recipes are simple directions are explicit. Each supper gives ideas of what wines accompany each dinner. Each recipe will tell you vegan options. It's been great for me transitioning into the vegetarian world. My children have been enjoying the food.

We are not a vegetarians, but this book helped me round out my family's diet to include several very tasty vegetarian dishes. My family loves all that I have tried and some of the dishes have become regular fare with us. You may need to expand your spice and sauce collection as you make the first few dishes, but once that is done almost all of the ingredients are available at your grocery store. The sample menus at the back help you navigate through this book. Ms. Jaffrey introduces many recipes with when and on what occasion that food is eaten. She also helps with where to get some of the more exotic ingredients. Recipes come from India, China, Japan, Korea, and the Middle East.

When we lived in rural Ohio, this book received little use...too many of the ingredients were not available. Now that we live in California, I use this book more frequently. Many of the recipes are complicated...the author takes few shortcuts, yet I have never been disappointed with anything I have cooked from this book. Everything is very flavorful.
Yes...in the Thanksgiving menu the author includes her husband's turkey recipe, in the spirit of being inclusive at family feasts. While I do not plan on using it, I see no reason to dismiss the book outright because of one recipe out of several hundred.

OK. If you loved the food at those, what was it, Country Life restaurants, this is the kind of food you will get from here.
I did like the food.
And I like the fact that she gives a range of times, depending on how fast or slow your slow cooker is. One of mine is really very fast. Another works best if everything is heated before it's put into the crock.
But what I really use this for is her directions for baking bread. Since I don't have an oven, use slow cookers for three quarters of my cooking, I'm tickled pink.
If you remember to put a towel under the lid, you can even get a pretty fair crust.
I actually bought this book because my dr said I needed to go on a low-cholesterol diet and the low-cholesterol cookbooks weren't going to help me with the transition because I found those recipes bland, bland, bland. So, I started checking out the vegetarian cookbooks. I wound up with 6 cookbooks between the 2 subject matters. Every single recipe in the One-Dish Vegetarian cookbook has been absolutely delicious even to a mid-western raised "where's the beef" type person. Some of the recipes sound strange (for example, Spaghetti with carmelized onions) but don't let that keep you from trying it. This was actually one of my favorites. Only one word of caution...the portions are very large. I started splitting the recipies in half and my husband and I still had ... Read More:

This book contains absolutely delicious, creative vegetarian entrees that are easy to make and don't take a lot of time to prepare. Many of the condiment and vegetable side dish recipes are in her other cookbook, which was disappointing because I also own the other book. I had hoped that there wouldn't be any overlap. However, if you don't own the other book, you'll be happy to find those recipes in this one! This book has far more vegetarian entrees than her other cookbook. I was surprised that the carb counts are so high in the entrees (about 2X the carbs as protein) but, then again, it is difficult to get high enough complete proteins without getting such high carb counts on a strict vegetarian diet. All-in-all, it contains delicious ideas with clear directions. ... Read More:
