I bought this book hoping to learn how to make better home-cooked vegetarian meals. While I thought it was a nice, informative introduction to vegetarian cooking for those new to vegetarianism, as a long-time lacto-ovo vegetarian who wants to improve her cooking skills, I didn't find it very helpful. In my opinion, too much time was spent discussing things about vegetarianism that I already knew about (e.g., vegetarian philosophy, etc.) and not enough time spent on cooking techniques and recipes. So, I recommend this book only to people new to vegetarianism (guess that'll teach me not to pay more attention to book titles!). Culinary challenged, long-time vegetarians such as myself might be better off looking elsewhere.

I was really excited about this book, especially after reading such great reviews. I have made a number of recipes, and most of them have been so bland- we've had to add a lot of spices just to make them have any flavor. Some have been good- but I am disappointed.

I just love this book. The author has a way of making you feel like you are deep down in the south, in the kitchen cooking with her. The recipes are good and all have the down south feel and taste. So if you are vegan/vegetarian and have a yearning for down south food, order this book, you will not be disapponted.

I have purshased a whole lot of books on indian cooking. Most of them try to cover a lot of reciepes resultinng in quantity over quality.
This book covers a limited number of reciepes but coveres the entire range to plan a complete feast. The book makes good uses of the images to convey the ingridents as well as give an idea of the end result. The small tips and trics given on most of the the pages really works wonders.
I have tried most of the reciepes and have got great compliments from people who have tasted them.
For some reason, this book is in my house even though none of us are vegetarians. That being said, I have used it many, many times. There is so much information in here, lots of culinary basics that are made lighter or healthier. And I really love (in contrast with some other reviewers) the author's view about soy products. Tofu ad tempeh are good, but there have been vegetarians in the West long before this stuff was available. I love the use of lots of vegetables and whole grains. The bread and soup sections are especially great.
I will often turn to this cookbook if I want to cook something basic but don't know how, like different kinds of muffins, onion soup, or focaccia.
Just looking through the chapters I was in awe at the far reaching extent of Vegan Fire & Spice ... Close to Callalou, Nigerian Peanut Soup, Majorcan Baked Vegetables, Turkish Eggplant, Moroccan Spiced Carrots, Vegetable Samosas, Vindaloo Vegetables, Fusian Asian Noodles, Hunan Fried Rice, Indonesian Coconut Rice ... I could easily go on as this cookbook has around 200 savory recipes. Yes, savory. I have to admit, as much as I love dessert, I find the baked goods and sweets recipes often overwhelm vegan cookbooks. Robin gets right to the point, offering tons of recipes for everyday meals. And I do mean everyday. While the flavors may be exotic, the ingredients are surprisingly accessible. Most of the recipes can be whipped up using ingredients I readily stock ... Read More:
