Some of the reviewers of this book marked it down because it contains recipes that require fish products. In my opinion this is very unfair. Not all vegetarians are vegans, and some do in fact eat fish as well as eggs and cheese. Rating this book low because it contains recipes for foods you don't eat would be like me rating Joy of Cooking only one star because it has recipes for pork, squirrel, and bear meat, none of which I eat. Neither do I eat shellfish, which is one reason why I was so happy to find this book. Japanese cooking makes extensive use of all manner of sea creatures which would not be something I would eat, so I must either overlook or adapt many recipes in most cookbooks dealing with Japanese cuisine. With this one I can use every ... Read More:

This is undoubtedly THE BEST cook book for south indians away from home who are trying to cook memories of hot fresh home made food... Very authentic and detailed and a great result each time as long as you follow the recipe to a T.
Much better than the Lord krishna cuisine cook book.
And the pictures.... its worth it just for the pictures!

I have never been so impressed with a cookbook before. I use it 95% of the time that I cook. I keep reaching for it because it's so easy. I was vegetarian for a long time, but very picky about what I ate. I wouldn't eat cooked veggies, no grains except for rice and I just don't know how I didn't get sick. But with the Saucy Vegetarian I'm eating so many grains that I am lucky if I see rice once a week. I eat all my vegetables cooked as well as raw. I have a bigger variety of salads and pasta. The recommendations for foods to go with the sauces are incredible. I love how she consistently uses the same ingredients over and over so I don't feel like I'm wasting money for ingredients that will only be good for one recipe. I always hated tofu, but now I ... i'm not a full-fledged vegetarian, because every so often i get a hankerin' for a cheeseburger or some popcorn chicken (it's rare, but by god it happens!) but i choose not to cook meat in my home. i've tossed out many sub-par vegetarian cookbooks due to bland dishes and uninspired flavor combinations. boring food is a crime against humanity! i like to cook tasty dishes, and i'm willing to spend extra time making dinner as long as i feel sure that the end result will be worth it.
i like this cookbook because it has lots of purdy pictures and lots of tasty recipes. often times i have found that many veggie cookbooks full of pictures have god-awful recipes in them. that isn't the case with this cookbook.
if you are looking for quick recipes, you may want ... Read More:

My partner and I received this book as a Christmas gift. I have a rather extensive cookbook collection, and I assumed that this book would remain with the others, referenced from time to time. Instead, it rarely makes its way back tot he shelf as I am always cooking from it. So far, we are about 10 for 10 with good recipes; I haven't hit upon a bad one yet. I am so confident in this cookbook, that I will make a dish for company or a pot-luck without testing it first. The recipes are simple, easy, and absolutely delicious. I recommend this book to anyone who loves good food.

As a vegetarian I prefer dishes that are already vegetarian to begin with, rather than having to modify recipes (it doesn't always work out that well), so this book is going to be a staple in my cookbook repertoire. I would highly recommend this to those who love middle-eastern food. The book is a gem.

This book is a huge disappointment. It seems to be the most basic, elementary, idiotic presentation of the obvious that is possible. It is even in big huge print so I guess it is designed for imbeciles. This is a horrible waste of paper.

You don't have to be a vegetarian to take advantage of this book. I am a non-vegetarian with a 1 1/2-year-old daughter who does not like meat. I was very worried that she would not get enough protein and iron so I purchased this book to educate myself more about non-animal sources of the nutrients. What an eye-opener! Even the nutrition courses I took in college did not provide me with such wealth of information. This book will tell you all you need to know to feed yourself and your family healthily and nutritiously. Interestingly, it will also change the way you look at the food on your plate. I'll be delighted if my daughter will one day happily eat red meat (organic of course). But I no longer worry that she doesn't.
